Summer Camp
It’s time to get outside and play! Happy Independence Day! This month’s lounge explores the unique right-of-passage that is Summer Camp. We’ll attempt to recreate a virtual campfire with stories and songs both familiar and new. John Ballinger leads us in a rousing sing-along, and we hope you'll do exactly that. Ann Closs-Farley and I introduce you to-- or remind you of-- the greatest summer camp movie of all time, and we pair it with a recipe that comes straight from the title. The Burglars of Hamm are back with a cautionary tale for any who are sending their kids to camp for the first time. Be careful what you wish for, it just might come true. Keythe wonders how it is that we still send our kids off to camp in the first place when it can’t possibly be safe to do so, and he reintroduces a campfire classic that’s, sadly, fallen out of fashion. And Double Batch Daddy celebrate our uniqueness... and our togetherness in song.
Sunshine and Shadows
Welcome to The Lounge! It's June. We’ve gone halfway around the wheel of the year together! In this episode, Keythe shares some thoughts about Growing Up-- after all, June is the season of Graduations, Commencements and Weddings. John Ballinger has arranged three summer-y tunes. One’s hot. One’s cool. All of ‘em are sunny. In honor of Father's Day, Keythe invites both his kids to the Lounge this month. Ruby Farley shares one of her favorite films, and we pair it with the perfect summer desert. Vincent Farley talks about about what it means to take Pride in who you are. Matt Almos shares a story about a young man who goes into the ocean as a child, but comes out a little wiser and more grown up. And Double Batch Daddy help us get breezy and lazy. As always, The Lounge is intuitively designed to help you: To Learn. To Love. To Lounge.
May Flowers
Explicit
This month we’re exploring May Flowers-- the explosion of growth and color that comes this time of year. It’s a veritable Technicolor Dreamland out there. Can a children's’ game unlock the meaning of May for you? John Ballinger and Double Batch Daddy are gonna help you groove with the flowers, the fire and the peace that comes in May. You’ll hear from a pair of teachers who identified what students really need from their education, and explore how they created a whole new vision of public school to satisfy it. The Lounge Players drop in on a Mothers’ Day Luncheon like no other. And Keythe talks with Ruby Farley about an appropriately flower-filled film, and they pair it with unique and colorful recipes fresh from the garden. The Flower Garden. As always, we invite you: To Learn. To Love. To Lounge.
April Showers
This month’s show is about April Showers. The unexpected weather events that appear to threaten our garden just as it’s starting to take root, but are really setting the stage for future growth if we’re willing to roll with the challenges of change. In this episode we explore the concept of Dancing With the Trickster-- how do we learn to accept and cooperate with unexpected obstacles in our path, rather than waste our energy fighting against them? The Lounge Players present a tale of a woman trying to uncover the source of a mysterious smell in her neighborhood. What she discovers is both highly unusual... and strangely familiar. John Ballinger and Double Batch Daddy rock you, swing you and touch your heart with a trio of songs featuring some special guests. Keythe and Ann Closs-Farley discuss a powerful baseball movie and pair it with a powerful baseball food. And we have a chat with Edgar McGregor, a young man who decided to stop fighting litterbugs and climate reality deniers, and start making real change happen right in his own backyard. As always, Live From the Lounge is an hour of stories, music and conversation intuitively designed to help you To Learn. To Love. To Lounge. Balance
As the world wakes from its winter slumber, as the ice begins to melt away from the streets and our brains alike, a period of growth begins. We hope you'll Lounge with us for an hour or so. The Lounge Players present a new modern fable: The Unloved Man, Michael Cramer chats with Keythe about his adventures as both a citizen of modern Brooklyn and his parallel life as a Jarl Valgard Stonecleaver, East Kingdom. In our Dinner and a Movie segment, Ruby Farley joins Keythe to pair one of the greatest movie adventures ever filmed with a rustic recipe that’s bound to get your mouth watering. Keythe presents the story of Gawain and The Green Knight. And John Ballinger and Double Batch Daddy are here to keep the Season Cycle spinning to the music of the spheres.
Love and Loss
This year, the celebration inspired by Saint Valentine, who was executed for performing marriages to keep men from going to war, is almost immediately followed by the tradition wherein many commence a 40-day period of sacrifice and reflection that begins with a remembrance of our mortality: “Ashes to ashes and dust to dust,” they say. The Dead of Winter, indeed. This episode features a "scoop" about ABC's latest iteration of everyone's favorite reality dating show, a conversation with John Ballinger and his wife Uma about how they learned to love more deeply after a sudden brain aneurism changed their life. You'll also hear John play the song inspired by that experience. In our Dinner and a Movie segment, Keythe talks with his daughter Ruby Farley about one of her favorite filmed love stories, and they each bake a pie inspired by the tale. Keythe remembers sneaking around one of Los Angeles' most stunning cathedrals and having an encounter that would change his life. And Double Batch Daddy play Nature Boy and I Think I See the Light.
CA Dreamin'
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Did you make any resolutions? In this episode, Keythe talks about The How, Why… and When of making changes in your life. Keythe also chats with Patti Cumby about how she chose to quit smoking and how she did it without stress. The Lounge Radio Players present a rousing adventure about a genie who really knows how to make your wishes come true. In the Dinner and a Movie Segment, Keythe recommends a comedy that holds The Secret That’ll Change Your Life, and pairs it with a recipe for a common dish that can be just as unique as you are. And John Ballinger and Double Batch Daddy play "California Dreamin'" and a DBD original called "Move Untried" which invites us to "try the move that’s always left untried."
The Light Returns
As we approach the Darkest Night of the Year, Keythe Farley ruminates on how our holiday traditions encourage us to defy the darkness by lighting up-- our homes, public squares, menorahs, Christmas trees and kinaras. Ray Chase and Julia McIlvaine play two sweet slackers who dream up new holiday traditions while they watch Charlie Brown on TV. Matt Almos takes us on a trip to The Worst Mall in the World. In the Dinner and a Movie segment, Keythe pairs a classic holiday movie with a recipe you've probably never tried. John Ballinger and Double Batch Daddy put a punk spin on “Deck the Halls,” sing protest songs with Keythe and perform a sweet cover of “Celebrate Me Home.” As always, Live from the Lounge is an invitation To Learn.
