Episode 10: Inspire Calm

(Recorded 3-21-25) If there is one thing we've learned over the last several months and years, all we can predict is a lack of predictability. But how do you, as a leader, respond and react in the face of this seemingly ever-changing workplace landscape? Ask yourself a few questions and be honest with your responses: - Do you come unhinged when a situation does not go as planned❓ - Do you turn plaid (little Spaceballs reference) when an employee does not do as you requested ❓ - Do you get borderline apoplectic when things go a bit sideways❓ Simply, the above-described behaviors are unacceptable even, and especially, in the face of tension, tumult or terror. It is under those circumstances that a leader's demeanor and actions are of paramount importance. So, what can and should the best of us do in the worst of circumstances? Two words: Inspire Calm. I hope you'll listen to this important message and that you will share the post, give us your thoughts, and make more suggestions for future episodes! Oh, and GO BLUE! Episode 9: Baseball Season is Finally Here … But, Ignore the Strike Zone

(Recorded 3-15-25) Given the goings-on and the seemingly daily changes in the workplace, prudent organizations are focusing on the safety and well-being of their employees and have doubled down on harassment prevention trainings and other sessions that enhance the employee experience. That has kept me plenty busy and I am so gratified to be a part of this concentration on workplace culture. One subject that ALWAYS comes up during these programs is physical touch. And, while of course certain contact is inappropriate, we should not and must not lose our empathy and kindness about the workplace. I hope you will give a watch to this week's video and hear about: - Ignoring the strike zone - Jamie’s idea for our wedding song - ESPN “30 for 30” and Mia's Bat Mitzvah - Bruno Mars’ song “Count on Me” - Being “dead inside” - The hug hello Learn how all of the above relate DIRECTLY to creating and maintaining a positive, safe and human-centric workplace culture. Please comment. Please share. And, please please keep sending topics! Duane Morris LLP Duane Morris Institute ______________________________________________________ Michael S. Episode 8: Everyone You Meet is Fighting a Battle You Know Nothing About - Embracing Mental Health at Work

The incomparable Robin Williams once said, “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.” Truer words have never been shared. And, intellectually, most leaders understand this statement to be true. Tragically, far too many of those same leaders keep that understanding buried in the recesses of their brains. Move that idea closer, with a permanent place in front of mind. Recognize and always remember that everyone struggles from time to time. Appreciate that mental health concerns must be tended to and addressed. Look out for each other. Advocate for each other. Protect each other. I hope you enjoy this video about mental health at work and practical steps organizations can take to help their employees. Be kind. Always. Please listen. Please comment. Please share. Episode 6: Shut Up And Listen!

Are you a good listener? Are you sure? As a leader, a co-worker or a friend, the willingness to listen can be a difference maker in someone's daily experience or even in someone's life. But, the ability simultaneously to shut one's mouth and open one's ears is becoming a dying art. Most people think they are good listeners. But, ask yourself a few questions: 1. Do you interrupt, even if to share an experience that you think might help? 2. Are you formulating a response before the person has finished speaking? 3. Have you looked at your watch or have your eyes glanced away from the person talking to you? 4. Are you demonstrating empathy and compassion non-verbally? I hope you will give a take a few minutes with today's video and learn about how to engage in meaningful, non-competitive listening. It can be your leadership superpower. ______________________________________________________ Michael S. Cohen is a partner in Duane Morris’ Employment, Labor, Benefits and Immigration Practice Group. Episode 5: The Super Bowl Champs Show How New Ways of Hiring Matters!

The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl Champions! How did they do it? How did this organization reach the pinnacle of the National Football League (NFL)? Look no further than the hiring practices the team employed in assembling its roster. Who did the Eagles bring into the nest? Players with flaws? ✅ Players overlooked or looked past? ✅ Players cast off by other franchises? ✅ Players who rivals considered "not worth the money." ✅ The Eagles didn't do things the way they always had been done. The team refused constantly to rely on anachronistic NFL norms and antiquated ways of thinking. And in so doing, the Eagles achieved the ultimate success. One way your organization can achieve this kind of success: STOP REQUIRING FOUR YEAR COLLEGE DEGREES WHEN THEY ARE NOT NECESSARY! Far too many organizations refuse to adapt and refuse to adjust to the ever-changing landscape, to new ways of thinking, to the realities of higher education. Please give this a serious listen and please comment and share! And, for one last time (for now) . . . E-A-G-L-E-S! ______________________________________________________ Michael S. Episode 4: How Introverted Leaders (and all leaders) Help By Getting In The Hole

Robin Williams once said, "Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always." Since I started this video series, so many of you have reached out, asking how you can help your employees in this new world of Executive Orders and the roll back of some very basic and fundamental human rights. My answer: Get in the hole. What does that mean? Make sure that your employees, that your colleagues, that your friends all understand that you understand that circumstances are challenging. Make sure that they appreciate that you appreciate that we all have struggles and that they may be significant right now. Make sure that you don't walk by the hole into which they have fallen - jump in! Please listen to how the best person I know, who is an introvert, leads with empathy and kindness and, without hesitation, gets in the hole. And, once again thank you for your comments and your shares and keep the topic suggestions coming! ______________________________________________________ Michael S. Episode 3 - The 5 Rs of Harassment Prevention and Correction

Harassment claims are on the rise and the EEOC is coming - maybe for you! As you know, in April 2024, the EEOC issued its Guidance on Workplace Harassment (https://lnkd.in/eiCc2663). Recently, the Commission updated that Guidance and made absolutely clear that an organization's failure to provide harassment prevention training or its providing inadequate training may lead to liability (https://lnkd.in/eVQt2asN). Plan and simple, the EEOC is not messing around and the Commission is looking to make an example of organizations that are not following its dictates. Is your organization ready? Do your supervisors and managers know that, from a legal standpoint, they are the organization and their action or inaction may render your organization liable? Have you educated those leaders as to what their legal responsibilities look like in the face of inappropriate conduct based on protected class? Are you certain that your supervisors and managers appreciate the critical importance of the 5 Rs? I hope you will take a few moments to better understand these legal obligations. I also hope you will comment and share. And, of course, GO BIRDS! ______________________________________________________ Michael S. Episode 2: Ignore The Workplace Golden Rule!

Thank you all so much for the incredible response to Episode 1. Your feedback, both on-line and off-line, has been heartening and incredibly instructive. Please keep it coming! Today's episode takes aim at the Workplace Golden Rule - that leaders must treat all employees the same all the time and that we should strive for 100% consistency. Might this kind of management minimize litigation risks? Maybe. Will this approach ensure that we do not get the most out of our people? ABSOLUTELY! Effective leaders know what motivates each of their people. Effective leaders embrace notions of equity in management. Effective leaders understand that treating everyone fairly does not require treating everyone the same. And, of course, Go Birds! ______________________________________________________ Michael S. Episode 1: Political Conduct At Work

(Recorded 1-20-25) I'm excited to launch the first installment of my workplace podcast series. So many of you have been kind enough to express your enthusiasm and to share your thoughts for subjects. I am hoping that you enjoy today's episode and that, as I continue with more, they become a regular part of your content consumption. I'm trying to keep the episodes authentic and practical. That is to say, you're going to get the real me, for better or for worse. If I'm in a hotel room when as idea strikes, I will film in a hotel room. If I just finished coaching a softball practice, sadly you may have to endure that as well. I will "go there" when I think it's necessary, but not simply to create chaos or controversy. The workplace is complicated. Nuance must continue to exist. And, we absolutely have to continue to challenge ourselves and each other. Apropos of the above, one topic that was suggested over and over again was politics in the workplace. And, given that yesterday was Inauguration Day, this seems like a perfect place to start. And, of course, Go Birds. _________________________________________________ Michael S. Cohen is a partner in Duane Morris’ Employment, Labor, Benefits and Immigration Practice Group. Episode 7: Be Curious, Not Judgmental: Recognizing and Avoiding Affinity Bias

"Thinking is difficult. That's why most people judge." Carl Jung This idea of judgment and laziness rather than deliberation and thoughtfulness very often is the foundation of implicit bias. We stereotype and generalize as a way to protect ourselves from and against those things with which we are not familiar. It's safe. It's easy. It's a sure fire way to guarantee homogeneity and a lack of inclusion. One of the most common and insidious forms workplace-infecting implicit bias is affinity bias - the tendency to connect with people with whom you share interests or experiences. The failure to recognize and/or to take steps against affinity bias can have massive and negative ramifications, including everything from hiring to workplace culture to retention to an unwillingness or over-willingness to provide meaningful performance management. Please listen. Please comment. Please share. Please keep more ideas coming! And, thanks for taking the time!
