Many cultural practices act as sign posts or even guardians to more important principles. The practices themselves are not sacred and can change, but we must be thoughtful, wise, and careful about how, when, and if we choose to push back on cultural constructs. Indeed, it is wise and even good to do so at times (slavery, women's right to vote, etc.), but other times it takes more care and consideration for what the collateral affect might be.
