The Disappearance of Mary Flanagan (UK - 1959)

Described as the oldest open case on the books of the Metropolitan Police, Mary Flanagan was a London teenager who disappeared from her West Ham home on New Year's Eve 1959. On the day of her disappearance, she was due to attend her employer's New Year's Eve party, which was held annually in the Silvertown plant. The last known sighting of her was approaching West Ham tube station. The following day, her family realised she had not come home the preceding evening, and Mr and Mrs Flanagan visited the sugar refinery in search of information. In a curious twist, they were informed that she had actually been absent from work for the previous fortnight. Mary Flanagan may have eloped with a man she had been seen with frequently in the last few weeks of 1959. He was supposedly another Irish immigrant and may have worked in the merchant navy, although police say they have never been able to trace such a man. He was called Tom and undoubtedly existed under one name or another. There have been no sightings of Mary since 31 December 1959. On 28 March 2020, 70-year-old Anthony Williams of Cwmbran, Wales, strangled his 67-year-old wife Ruth to death. The following February, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the ground of diminished responsibility and was acquitted of murder. Anthony Williams was found not guilty of murder in a unanimous verdict. The following February, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the ground of diminished responsibility and was acquitted of murder. His defence argued that he acted due to his mental state, which had been worsened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lord Justice Bean, sitting with Mrs Justice Farbey and judge Paul Sloan QC, described the killing as a “very atypical” case of homicide, and dismissed the AGO’s application. His five years sentence was not extended. The starting point for a manslaughter sentence is between one and seven years, rising to life imprisonment at maximum. Due to the sustained nature of the attack, he would have faced seven-and-a-half years, but this was reduced to five years due to his guilty plea. As all prisoners in England and Wales are released at the halfway point of their sentence, he will be released in two-and-a-half years, less the eleven months he had already spent on remand. A Viper's Nest of Paedophiles - UK- 2020 (The Shirley Oaks Children’s home-Case)

This video is for mature audiences only. Trigger warning! The inquiry heard that hundreds of children were subjected to prolonged sexual, physical, and racial abuse and that paedophiles targeted the Shirley Oaks Children’s home campus in Croydon, London which could house up to 350 children until its closure in 1983. Victims were "drugged, tortured and sexually assaulted" by "very many paedophiles", the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse was told. Council staff “put vulnerable children in the path” of sex offenders, who infiltrated children’s homes and foster care, with “devastating, life-long consequences for their victims”, this damning report into decades of abuse has found. Employees in the south London borough of Lambeth “treated children in care as if they were worthless” and appeared to demonstrate “a callous disregard for the vulnerable children they were paid to look after”, according to the findings of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA). It heard evidence of children being raped, indecently assaulted, and sexually abused, but said that of complaints from 705 former residents across three such facilities, only one member of senior staff was ever disciplined. When children reported complaints at the time, they were routinely disbelieved. The report estimated the number of those abused was likely much higher and recommended the Metropolitan Police should consider whether there were grounds for a criminal investigation into one boy who died in a care home in 1977, having previously complained of being abused by a senior member of staff.
