A common thread in a lot of mainstream bondage scenes, as well as movies in general, between 1997 and 2013 includes various types and levels of sexual revenge against men who are promiscuous, sexually risque, predatory, or otherwise problematic. The bondage ranges from horrific to played for laughs, and the subjects of revenge aren’t always deserving of their respective punishment, but there seemed to be an underlying desire to punish men for their sexual exploits in pop culture while sexually problematic men were running rampant in real life. Since technology has been so inextricably linked to sexual discourse from the sex addict era-onward, sexting is discussed as something that was once a cultural fear, but now is completely ubiquitous, especially among kinksters. The advent of cellphones with cameras made taking and sharing explicit images easier than ever. Access to internet chat rooms and forums made it easier to find likeminded individuals. Text messages have made it possible for people to type out the most depraved sexual fantasies from anywhere, without others noticing. And for the sex scandals, there are now digital records of all these things. To contextualize this era, sexual politics from the late 90s and early 2010s are discussed, which includes the spread of internet porn, the explosion of personal mobile phones and sexting, the age of shock jocks, irony, pre-app dating websites, sex tapes, and Girls Gone Wild. The Realness We Do in the Shadows

To wrap Performing the Ordinary, Kevin and Nat discuss how realness and performing the ordinary factor into the comedic, pseudo-reality-show What We Do in the Shadows with Dorian. The absurdity and hijinks of being eternal, immortal vampires comes with an awful lot of passing. First, there’s passing as human just so vampires could survive in the same world as them. Then, there’s the need to start over in a small town and getting emotionally wrapped up in the people who live there, the desire to become human again and live a delusion with a wellness cult, participating in human ideas of masculinity and femininity, or realizing that coming out as gay is the most boring thing reveal about someone. All of these things relate to kinksters and kinkster fantasies in different ways. Like other movies that have been discussed on KinkVision, there’s a definite queer and kinky sensibility in Death Becomes Her. Particularly, there is a great deal of passing from older women passing as young, dead and immortal women passing as alive and mortal, and then there’s Ernest. The soft, bald republican did most of the heterosexual adult male touchstones, but made a career around passing, was a complete beta male, and essentially was the desexualized love object in the love triangle between Helen and Madeline. Since there will always be people who demonize and punish others for being different in the normative world, people who are considered different need to put on a particular performance that shows others that they’re normal.
