I was watching Darian Mensah film when I decided to also track Duke's running back. I knew Nate Sheppard was good going in — 1,100 rushing yards, 11 touchdowns, 5.7 yards per carry, and nearly 300 receiving yards as a true freshman. Watching the film, I was even more impressed. In this video, I break down exactly what makes the Duke running back so special: the way he stays so low and square to the line of scrimmage that defenders literally can't track him until he's already past them, the elite elusiveness and short-area quickness that lets him create yards when nothing is there, and the physicality that makes him a genuine north-south threat too when the lane opens up. He's not just a great athlete — there are a lot of great athletes. Nate Sheppard already knows how to use those traits at a level you almost never see from a true freshman. He can't declare until the 2028 NFL Draft. Duke fans have a couple more seasons of this. Three true freshman running backs. Three guys with the skill set and the opportunity to make a real impact in 2026 — not just see the field, but actually contribute. Amari Latimer (West Virginia) is 5'10", 230 lbs as a true freshman and is so far ahead of the curve physically it's almost unfair. He's a downhill hammer who spells Cam Cook and keeps one of the most talented running backs in the country healthy throughout the season. Long term, this is his backfield. Derrek Cooper (Texas) was originally projected as a defender — then his senior year running back film showed up and changed everything. He's already 210 lbs, changes angles while getting downhill constantly, and fills a short-yardage role that neither Relique Brown nor Hollywood Smothers quite covers. This is Derrek Cooper's backfield by 2027. Savion Hiter (Michigan) is the one I'm most excited about. A 5-star, 6', 210 lb running back with elite short-area quickness and the long speed to take it the distance. I think he leads Michigan in rushing yards by the end of 2026. If you stacked him up against 5-star RBs from the last five recruiting classes, he'd be one of the top names in that group. Most 5-stars check the athletic and physical boxes. Meredith puts exclamation points on them, and then actually uses them at a level you almost never see from a high schooler. In this video, I break down the North Crowley cornerback's film: the explosiveness and zone instincts that let him close on windows and eat up cushion before quarterbacks even know it, the 6'2.5" length he already weaponizes at the catch point to rake the ball away, and flashes of patience and hand placement in man coverage that look more college-ready than high school.
