When bird symbolism is used in Christianity, the most popular one is that of a Dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit. We hear words like “gentle” and “calm” in connection to doves and we think of the Spirit of God in that way. But many may not know that years ago, Celtic Christians had an intriguing name for the Holy Spirit that lent toward a different bird; perhaps an unexpected animal. They called the Holy Spirit An Geadh-Glas, or “the Wild Goose.” The name hints at the mysterious nature of the Holy Spirit. Much like a wild goose, the Spirit of God cannot be tracked or tamed. With Him, there seems to be an air of unpredictability. At times, the Holy Spirit can be like a dove leading us to a place of stillness and peace.
