Episode notes

"You don't think your way into becoming the person you want to be. You become that person by practicing being them. One decision at a time." – Laura Colon

This week I'm going solo again to build on last episode's introduction to Inspired Authority. If last week was about what the framework is, this episode is about what it actually looks like to live it — day to day, decision by decision. I walk through my own story of hitting every marker of traditional success (VP by 35, two houses before 30, a marriage I'm proud of) while realizing I had stopped designing my life and started just surviving it.

One of the biggest shifts for me was realizing that ambition and exhaustion don't have to be a package deal. I used to measure results by what I could accumulate — the promotion, the paycheck, the next goal. Now I measure it by what my life is actually producing: Am I happy? Am I proud of who I'm becoming? Are the people around me better because I'm in their lives? That shift changed everything about how I spend my time and energy, and it's what eventually leads to the biggest idea in this episode — that the real goal isn't building a great life for yourself, it's building something through your life that multiplies beyond you.

Key Takeaways:

  • Why reconnecting with who you were before the world told you what was "realistic" is the starting point for designing an intentional life.
  • How to catch the stories keeping you small — and the one question that creates space to change them.
  • The real difference between confidence and courage, and why presence means bringing your full self into the room.
  • Why influence has nothing to do with titles and everything to do with being useful.
  • A practical framework for protecting your energy: reduce what's draining you, increase what brings you joy.
