When it comes to our emotions, the goal is NOT to be happy all of the time, but to emotionally regulate - keep our distressing emotions in check because our emotions have the power to overwhelm concentration and logical thinking. It is when we have more distressing emotions than we have pleasant emotions that we are off balance.

When really extreme emotions last too long, or cause behaviors that are maybe out of place due to fear, worry, or anxiety, we can act out in ways that are harmful to us or to others.
