Grace in the Grind: Biblical Faith for Everyday Life

Grace in the Grind: Biblical Faith for Everyday Life

by Cody Hudson
Season 3

Who Does the Church Belong To?

Who does the Church belong to—the pastor, the members, the founding families, the largest donors, or Jesus Christ? In Pot 3, Cup 2 of Grace in the Grind, Cody Hudson examines what the Bible says about ownership, authority, leadership, and stewardship within the Church. Colossians 1 declares that Jesus is the Head of the body. Acts 20 says the Church was obtained through His blood. First Peter 5 commands pastors and elders to shepherd the flock of God—not their own flock. Together, these passages settle the question of ownership: The Church belongs to Jesus. That truth challenges both church leaders and church members. Pastors and elders possess real biblical authority, but it is delegated authority. They are shepherds, stewards, and servants—not owners, celebrities, or saviors. Members can also develop a sense of ownership through longevity, financial giving, family history, ministry involvement, or personal preference. Faithful service matters deeply, but service does not purchase control. Giving does not buy shares. Years of attendance do not create ownership rights. • Why Christ alone has the authority to define the Church • What it means for Jesus to be the Head of the body • Why the Church was purchased by Christ’s blood • The difference between biblical stewardship and personal ownership • How pastors can drift from shepherding into control • How members can confuse belonging with possession • Why churches should not be built around human personalities • What our reactions to change reveal about our hearts • How consumer Christianity can appear in traditional and modern churches • Why remembering Christ’s ownership brings freedom rather than fear This is not an attack on pastors, church members, donors, traditions, or long-standing congregations. It is an invitation for every believer to examine where responsibility may have drifted into entitlement, control, or the need to feel indispensable. The Church does not need another owner. She already has one Lord. And His name is Jesus. Colossians 1:15–18 Acts 20:28 1 Peter 5:1–4 1 Corinthians 1:10–13 1 Corinthians 3:5–9 Pot 3 of Grace in the Grind—Letting Scripture Shape Our View of the Church—examines the biblical nature, leadership, mission, community, worship, growth, and everyday life of the Church. This is not deconstruction or an attempt to tear down Christ’s Church. It is an invitation to examine our expectations, traditions, and practices and realign them with Scripture. Church Tradition or Biblical Command? — Extra Shot

How can Christians tell the difference between a biblical command and a familiar church tradition? In this Extra Shot of Grace in the Grind, Cody Hudson examines how practical church customs can gradually begin to feel like biblical requirements—even when Scripture never commanded them. Pews, rows of chairs, worship styles, dress expectations, service times, church buildings, bulletins, and the order of a Sunday service may all be useful. But usefulness does not automatically make a practice biblical, and familiarity does not give a tradition divine authority. This episode introduces a practical four-part test for examining church practices: • Commanded — Did Christ tell the Church to do this? • Modeled — Does the New Testament show a meaningful apostolic pattern? • Permitted — Has Scripture left room for Christian wisdom and freedom? • Familiar — Are we treating a repeated custom like a biblical requirement? The conversation also explores adiaphora—matters Scripture neither commands nor forbids—and why Christians must be careful not to bind another believer’s conscience where God has allowed freedom. This is not an argument against pews, church buildings, liturgy, contemporary worship, programs, or organized Sunday services. It is also not an argument that every new or informal approach is automatically more biblical. Traditional churches can mistake inherited practices for divine commands. Innovative churches can mistake novelty for spiritual maturity. Neither tradition nor innovation is the final authority. Scripture is. This episode will help listeners consider: • When does a church preference become an unwritten rule? • Is a familiar order of worship necessarily a biblical one? • How do church traditions shape our expectations? • What practices are essential to the Church? • Where has Scripture allowed freedom in church life? • Are we defending biblical truth or simply protecting our comfort? Before criticizing church leaders, furniture, music, or traditions, we must begin with the harder question: What has Scripture actually said—and what have we simply assumed? This Extra Shot accompanies Pot 3, Cup 1: “What Is the Church According to the Bible?” ABOUT POT 3 Pot 3 of Grace in the Grind—Letting Scripture Shape Our View of the Church—examines the biblical nature, mission, leadership, community, worship, growth, and everyday life of the Church. What Is the Church According to the Bible?

What is the Church according to the Bible—and does our experience of church match the picture Scripture gives us? In the first cup of Pot 3, Cody Hudson opens Matthew 16, Acts 2, and 1 Peter 2 to examine what Jesus established when He said, “I will build My church.” Many Christians use the word church to describe a building, a Sunday service, an organization, or a collection of programs. Those things can serve the Church, but none of them fully defines what the Church is. The New Testament describes the Church as the people of Christ living under the lordship of Christ. Believers are a spiritual family devoted to biblical teaching, fellowship, prayer, shared life, mutual care, and discipleship. We are living stones being built together with Christ as the cornerstone. This episode asks some important questions: • Have we confused attending church with being part of the Church? • Are we sharing life together or simply sitting in adjacent chairs? • Would our local church notice if someone began drifting, struggling, or hurting? • Have our expectations been shaped more by Scripture or by what feels familiar? • What responsibility has Christ given each believer within His body? This is not a season of deconstruction, cynicism, or attacking pastors, denominations, traditions, church buildings, or Sunday gatherings. Pot 3 is an invitation to open Scripture and examine the biblical descriptions of the Church so we can realign our expectations, assumptions, and participation with Christ’s design. Before we discuss church leadership, biblical shepherding, spiritual maturity, church growth, conflict, reconciliation, mission, and multiplication, we must begin with the foundational question: What is the Church according to the Bible? Does Our View of the Church Match the Bible? | Pot 3 Trailer

Trailer
What does the Bible actually say the Church is supposed to be? In this trailer for Pot 3 of Grace in the Grind, Cody introduces Christ and His Church—a season built around examining the assumptions, traditions, preferences, and familiar practices that often shape our understanding of church. Many of us inherited a particular picture of church without ever stopping to ask whether that picture fully aligns with Scripture. We can easily confuse tradition with biblical conviction, attendance with discipleship, activity with maturity, and personal preference with faithful practice. But the Church is more than a building, a weekly service, or a religious organization. Scripture describes her as the body of Christ, the bride of Christ, and the household of God. That changes the questions we ask. Instead of only asking, “Did I get something out of church?” we begin asking, “Am I helping build up the body?” Instead of only asking whether a church is growing numerically, we begin asking whether its people are maturing spiritually. Pot 3 will explore the biblical nature, mission, leadership, community, worship, discipleship, unity, conflict, and everyday life of Christ’s Church. These conversations may challenge some familiar assumptions, but the goal is not to attack traditions, criticize pastors, or tear down local churches. The goal is to let Scripture shape our understanding of the Church Christ loves and gave Himself for. The season grew out of a local church study that later became the book Christ and His Church: A Biblical Study of the Nature, Mission, and Life of the Church. This podcast makes those conversations accessible for everyday believers who want to understand the Church more clearly and participate in her life more faithfully. Pot 3: Christ and His Church. Extra Shot — Pot 2 Cup 12 Check Engine: A Warning Before the Breakdown

In this final Extra Shot of Pot 2, Check Engine: A Warning Before the Breakdown, we close out the season by looking at the warning lights God may have been revealing all along. Through this season of Grace in the Grind, we have tried to expose the warning lights that often get hidden in our society — the pressure to produce, the exhaustion we call responsibility, the panic of waiting, the strain in relationships, financial stress, discontentment, and the constant chase for “more.” These things are easy to ignore because they are often treated as normal, responsible, or even successful. But sometimes what our culture calls normal is actually a flashing light on the dashboard of our souls. Using the picture of a check engine light and Hebrews 12:11, this episode reminds us that a warning is not the enemy. God’s correction may feel uncomfortable in the moment, but it can produce the peaceful fruit of righteousness when we are trained by it. The question now is not simply, “Did we notice the warning?” The question is, “Will we slow down, let God look under the hood, and respond before things begin to break down?” Pot 2 has reminded us that the false dream cannot hold the weight of our lives. But the good news is this: a better foundation still stands, and His name is Jesus. Cup 12 — A Better Foundation Still Stands

Pot 2 Cup 12 A Better Foundation Still Stands What happens when the dream starts to crack? In this final cup of Pot 2 — The False Dream We Built On: Sold a Lie — we bring the whole season back to one central question: What foundation are we actually standing on? The American Dream can teach us to work hard, build responsibly, provide for our families, and steward our lives well. Those are not bad things. But when productivity, comfort, success, financial stability, or national identity become the foundation of our lives, the storm eventually reveals what was underneath all along. In this episode of Grace in the Grind, Cody walks through Matthew 7, 1 Timothy 6, and 1 Corinthians 3 to examine the difference between building a life that looks impressive from the outside and building a life that actually stands when tested. This conversation looks at contentment, stewardship, lifestyle creep, identity, success, and the mercy of God exposing shaky foundations before they collapse. This is not a call to shame. It is a call to return. Because work is good, but it makes a terrible identity. Financial stability is a gift, but it is a false peace. Family is a blessing, but it makes a dangerous god. And outcomes will always belong to the Lord. The false dreams will crack. The plans will change. The storms will absolutely blow. But a better foundation still stands — and His name is Christ. Cup 11 — Success Didn’t Define the Finish Line

What does it really mean to finish well? In this episode of Grace in the Grind, we continue Pot 2 — The False Dream We Built On: Sold a Lie — by confronting one of the deepest lies of the American Dream: that success is measured by speed, scale, visibility, productivity, and how much we can keep building. But Scripture gives us a better finish line. Through the quiet faithfulness of Henrietta, a rural Ozarks “Bible lady” who served Jesus without needing a platform, and the steady example of Papa Sam, a pastor who understood stewardship well enough to hand off leadership faithfully, this episode looks at what remains when capacity changes, seasons shift, and applause fades. Anchored in Psalm 71, Ecclesiastes 12, and 2 Timothy 4, Cup 11 asks: What if finishing well is not about staying impressive? What if faithfulness matters more than visibility? What if keeping the faith is the real finish line? This episode is for anyone wrestling with aging, changing capacity, ministry transition, burnout, legacy, productivity, or the fear of becoming unnecessary. The American Dream says, “Keep climbing.” Scripture says, “Keep the faith.” 🎙️ Listen to Grace in the Grind ☕ Arrow & Roots Coffee Co. ☕ Coffee Date — Arrow & Roots Coffee Co. ❤️ Support Arrow & Roots / Buy Me a Coffee 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Coffee Break: Biblical Truth on Parenting — Apple Podcasts 📘 Christ and His Church: A Biblical Study of the Nature, Mission, and Life of the Church

Extra Shot — Cup 10: Stop Applying for the Holy Spirit’s Job

What happens when love turns into control? In this Extra Shot of Grace in the Grind, Cody Hudson builds from Cup 10: Letting Go of the Outcome and presses into one of the hardest places to surrender: the people we love most. It is one thing to admit we cannot control outcomes. It is another thing to admit we cannot control hearts. This episode looks honestly at the temptation to become the “assistant Holy Spirit” in someone else’s life — trying to manufacture conviction, force repentance, manage spiritual growth, or pressure people into wisdom. Whether in parenting, marriage, discipleship, friendship, or family relationships, our concern can quietly become control when we forget that only God can change the heart. Through Scripture from John 16 and 1 Corinthians 3, this Extra Shot reminds us that the Holy Spirit convicts, God gives the growth, and our job is faithfulness — not sovereignty. We are called to speak truth, love deeply, warn carefully, pray consistently, and obey faithfully. But we are not called to carry what only God can do. If you have ever tried to argue someone into maturity, pressure someone into repentance, or carry the spiritual outcome of someone you love, this episode is a needed reminder: the Holy Spirit has not resigned, and you do not have to keep applying for His job. Cup 10 — Letting Go of the Outcome

What happens when you are doing the right things, praying the right prayers, showing up faithfully, and still cannot control how the story ends? In Cup 10 of Grace in the Grind — Pot 2: The False Dream We Built On, Cody Hudson talks about the hard but necessary line between faithful obedience and trying to own the outcome. This episode presses into the tension many believers feel: we trust God theologically, but functionally we often live as if our faithfulness should guarantee our preferred result. Through Scripture from Proverbs 16, Luke 22, and James 4, this conversation looks at surrender, control, discipleship, parenting, planning, and what it means to obey God with open hands. Letting go of the outcome is not giving up. It is not passivity. It is learning to trust God with what only God can carry. The episode frames this around releasing the belief that “faithfulness entitles us to a specific ending” while still obeying, planning, loving, and showing up faithfully. If you have ever found yourself praying while still micromanaging, obeying while white-knuckling, or trying to make faithfulness produce guarantees, this cup is for you. EXTRA SHOT — CUP 9 The Altar Before the Calendar

Extra Shot — Cup 9: The Altar Before the Calendar We love trying to fix spiritual drift with better schedules, cleaner routines, new apps, and color-coded calendars. But a calendar cannot repent for you. A planner cannot reorder your loves. And a productivity tool cannot restore worship. In this Extra Shot of Grace in the Grind, Cody presses deeper into the theology behind Cup 9, Starting Over Without Starting From Scratch. If God has revealed drift in your life, the first question is not, “How do I fix my schedule?” The better question is, “What needs to return to the altar?” Looking at Romans 12:1, Matthew 6:21, Luke 9:23, and Psalm 127:1, this episode confronts the difference between time management and true surrender. Worship is not a time slot. It is lordship. The problem is not always disorganized time — sometimes it is disordered love. And if Christ is Lord, the altar is not a negotiating table. A cleaner calendar might improve your week, but only surrender can reorder your worship.
