Episode notes

This Monday on Ghosts of the Gazette: come on down to 1912! Kendra tells the tragic story of Candace Wheeler, whose drowning death became entangled in a bitter family feud. At the center is her famous father, author James Cooper Wheeler, who was the son of the famous Candace Thurber Wheeler, whose relentless battle against Candace's fiancé, Otto Meyer, and his brother over wills and estates would ultimately lead to a shocking downfall of his own. Blake explores the baffling disappearance of young nurse Dorcas Snodgrass, who vanished after passing through New York's Grand Central Station. Days later, she was found in Dubois Creek in New York's Catskill Mountains—but how she got there, and what really happened, remains a mystery more than a century later.

Every other Monday, we dig into fascinating stories from the past — all reported and talked about in the newspapers on the exact same date (though many years ago) as the episode airs. It’s history, headlines, and a touch of mystery, all rolled into your new favourite podcast.
