Episode notes
Ross's attempts to win Rachel back hit a wall until a VHS tape from prom night changes the equation entirely. Monica survives a deeply uncomfortable job interview and is forced to admit to her parents that she was fired, while Joey repays Chandler's years of financial support with an engraved gold bracelet that Chandler publicly ridicules — not knowing Joey is standing right behind him.
The prom video is the emotional hinge of the series: it reveals that a teenage Ross dressed in his father's tuxedo to rescue Rachel from being stood up, then watched her leave with her date before she ever knew he tried. Seeing that moment reframes everything Rachel had been resisting, and the kiss that follows carries weight because it required no explanation. The episode also establishes the show's template for balancing genuine sentiment with immediate comic deflation.
