Sage "Paradise Crick"
A long, busy week comes to a close with the pastoral fantasy of M. Sage’s “Paradise Crick.” It’s such a wonderful record, and I hope you have an opportunity to get lost within it. There was a new Seltzer Salon released yesterday - a great chat with Ben Vida about his latest record. I hope you’ll check it out. PLUS Medicine For a Nightmare announced their third journal (w/ a graphic score by yours truly) and compilation (also a track by me) - it looks amazing. Check it out! The Seltzer Salon #2: Ben Vida
As much as Ben Vida’s previous work has caught and held my attention, his new album with Nina Dante and Yarn/Wire, “The Beat My Head Hit,” has hit me like something else entirely. It’s a phenomenal expression of a musical space Vida has been exploring for the last few years that lands in multiple ways. There are visceral reactions that lead to emotional swings from joy to wistfulness with many stops in between. I can’t stop listening to it. Ben and Brad chat about collecting language, the human voice as a synthesizer, how the new album started, and where this piece of music is going in the future. “The Beat My Head Hit” is out now on Shelter Press. https://benvida.bandcamp.com/album/the-beat-my-head-hit https://www.yarnwire.org/ https://www.ninadante.com/ https://www.instagram.com/thesnakesaidtotheriver/ The Seltzer Salon is a concise, conversational podcast hosted by Brad Rose and produced by Foxy Digitalis. Each episode features a musician, artist, writer, or anyone, really, focusing on a single project or idea. I know we all have limited time each day, so I wanted to do something a little smaller scale with just as much impact, so episodes will be 25-45 minutes in length. Brad Rose is the the principal writer and editor-in-chief of Foxy Digitalis, an online music magazine and has run various DIY record labels for the last 30 years. This episode goes off the rails quick. Lots of talk about peaches, rural peach festivals, and how a lot of peach-flavored things taste very bad. Alright! More importantly, the album of the day hit me pretty hard and introduced me to an artist I’m excited to learn more about. Wednesday episodes are exclusively on Patreon. I try not to throw the word ‘legend’ around a lot, but it certainly applies to the great Mike Cooper. His newest album, “Black Flamingo,” is a real mind blower. A reminder that the Foxy Digitalis site is dormant this week as I take a break to deal with some things, but there will still be new episodes of the Daily (tomorrow on Patreon, hey hey!). Today’s pick really surprised me in the best way and sent me scurrying off to dig deep into Mike Paradinas’s discography. Plus two news bits from Bill Orcutt and Keith Fullerton Whitman.
