(episode begins with a trailer) In this episode of FBMW Neo Harter sits down with Professor Alison Brysk (the chair of the Political Science Department at UCSB) to discuss her meaningful work in international human rights, and how her studies have led to her most recent publication: Abortion Rights Backlash: a struggle for Democracy in the Europe and the Americas. In this highly critical book, Brysk finds that anti-abortion legislation is typically a symptom of an undemocratic government, and that recent attacks on abortion rights come from " a fascist-like" ideology that many nations' leaders have fallen back on in the midst of a globalized world. Brysk gives suggestions on how woman all over the world can combat this recent attack on their rights. In our first episode, Neo Harter discusses the life of Mikael Renee Gayen and how it has been affected by contracting Meningitis. Professor Gayen grew up in France and was an extremely studious university student whose life was thrown off course after contracting Meningitis type C, which caused him to lose his legs and his ability to hear. Yet he recovered and after years of dedication, became a Professor of French at UCSB.
