Exposit | Ep 39|John 14:16-31| The Spirit Who Remains
Episode notes
In John 14:16–31, Jesus prepares His disciples for His departure by centering them on a promise that will sustain them: the coming of the Holy Spirit. Rather than leaving them abandoned, Christ assures them that the Father will send “another Helper”—the Spirit of truth—who will dwell with them forever.
This episode walks through Jesus’ words in the Upper Room, showing how the Spirit continues the presence of Christ among His people. We explore the Spirit’s role as Teacher, Comforter, and indwelling presence of God, and how this promise transforms fear into peace. Jesus tells His disciples they will not be left as orphans, because God Himself will remain with them through the Spirit.
We also unpack key theological themes in the passage: the Trinity at work in salvation, the believer’s union with Christ, the peace that comes from reconciliation with God, and what it means that the Father is “greater” in role, not in deity. At the center is this truth: though Jesus ascends to the Father, the church is not abandoned—the Spirit remains.
