Esther 3–4 moves the story from quiet providence into open crisis.

In chapter 3, Haman is promoted to a powerful position in the Persian Empire.

The king’s servants are commanded to bow before him.

Mordecai refuses.

The text tells us Mordecai was Jewish, but it does not fully explain every reason behind his refusal.

Haman becomes furious.

But instead of directing his anger only toward Mordecai, he decides to destroy the entire Jewish population throughout the Persian Empire.

A date is chosen.

A decree is issued.

The king gives Haman extraordinary authority.

And suddenly the Jewish people face possible destruction.

Then chapter 4 shows us how God begins preparing a response.

Mordecai mourns.

The Jewish people fast.

Esther learns about the crisis.
