ECU100: Open Studios | Paintbox

ECU 100: Open Studios, a limited podcast series celebrating Emily Carr University's 100th year as an art and design educational institution. We go beyond the walls of our campus to visit with ECU graduates and faculty. In this episode, "Paintbox," we visit the historic studios at 188 West 3rd Avenue. This former warehouse was leased by ECU in the 1980s as a temporary space for senior students and then taken over by faculty, along with local and visiting artists. Since 1987, it has served as a studio space for artists including Stephen Shearer, Ron Terada, Brian Jungen, Geoffrey Farmer, and Ian Wallace. To find out what life at 188 West 3rd is like, we speak with current studio members, artists, and current and former ECU faculty Renée Van Halm on carrying oil paintings home on the bus as a teen, painting and ceramics, and becoming an ingénue again in her 70s (5:30); Landon Mackenzie on managing domestic and studio life, mentoring younger artists, and preparing for her current show at Evergreen Arts (15:20); Emily Hermant on making work for her show at the Vancouver Art Gallery and knowing when it's time to leave the studio (43:40); and Diyan Achjadi on creating the right workspace, experimenting, and creating in an open space with other artists (46:20). We also speak with recent Emily Carr University graduate David Macgillivray on creating paintings at a large scale, the difference between working on campus and moving into a studio, and being a studio assistant (35:05). This episode is named after the colourful facade of ECU's campus, created by Landon Mackenzie and Ben Reeves as a public art project. This episode was written, edited, recorded, and produced by Robin Mitchell Cranfield and Jefferson Aladé. This series was made without the use of artificial intelligence. Our theme music is "Play Me" by Kim Gordon. Our transition music within the episode is "A Rainbow Arches Over Flamingoes Wading in a Lagoon," written by Jen Yakamovich and Elijah Holstein.
