The Highs, Lows & Buffaloes of Podcasting Weekly for a Year
I'm recording this one on the eve of leaving the country for almost three weeks, at the tail end of a very long day, because that's just how this podcast has gone sometimes. This is episode 52. A full year of weekly episodes, no breaks, since I launched on my mom's birthday last September. So I wanted to do something a little different this week and just reflect. I'm using the "high, low, buffalo" format to walk through what this year of podcasting has actually been like: the goal I set and met, the people I got to interview and involve, the parts of myself I had to work through to keep showing up week after week, and the truth that this pace hasn't been sustainable. I also get into where AI fits (and doesn't fit) into how I produce this show. This isn't goodbye. It's just going to look different going forward. Thanks for listening and please follow the show to get updated when future episodes are released. Growing Together Over 35 Years: Marco Polo Chats with Emily Hanson
My dear friend Emily Hanson and I have been friends since fourth grade math class, and over the past several years we've kept our friendship alive through Marco Polo, sending each other video messages back and forth whenever life allows. So for this episode, I asked Emily if she'd be willing to let some of those videos become a podcast episode, and she said yes. We talk about how we met, what it's meant to stay close over 35 years, and what it looks like to support each other through very different lives. Emily lives on a farm and shares what that dream has actually looked like in practice, the beauty of it and the exhaustion of it. We talk about identity, about class, about culture, and about the ways parenting changes us and asks us to lead differently at every stage. Taking Care of Yourself So We Can Take Care of Each Other
This week I'm celebrating 50 episodes of Resourced and Resourceful Leadership, and marking this milestone has me reflecting on what this whole experiment has been about. In this solo episode, I take you through the winding path that led me to a story credited to Thich Nhat Hanh, about a father and daughter in the circus who learn that taking care of themselves individually is actually what allows them to take care of each other. I share where I'm at in a particularly full season of life, taking on an interim executive director role, parenting, seeing clients, getting ready to travel, and how (and why) I'm practicing self-care in the middle of it, Mentioned in this episode: The Culture Study podcast: https://culturestudypod.com/ One Art by Elizabeth Bishop: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/47536/one-art Six Poems for When You're Mentally Drained (did not actually read these but they were part of my process): https://www.readpoetry.com/six-poems-to-read-when-youre-feeling-mentally-drained/ The Father & Daughter Story by Thich Nhat Hanh Thich: https://gurmeet.net/inspiration/father-and-daughter-story/ Let's Connect! www.drchristinepetit.com LinkedIn: Christine E. Building Effective Coalitions: Katherine Golub Interviews Dr. Christine Petit
This week I'm re-airing a conversation I got to have as a guest on the podcast Conflict Decoded, hosted by Katherine Golub. Here's how she introduced it: Movement elder and co-founder of Sweet Honey in the Rock, Bernice Johnson Reagon, wrote: "You don't go into coalition because you like it. The only reason you would consider trying to team up with somebody who could possibly kill you is because that it is the only way you can figure that you can stay alive." If you're working across differences, grappling with conflict in your coalition work, or just want to become as effective as you can possibly be in building solutions to complex challenges for a community you love, this conversation is for you. In this episode, we talk about how to honor both the competitive and collaborative parts of ourselves, what it takes to move beyond territoriality and build the coalitions we need to win, how to keep going when the movement feels like it's losing more than it's winning, and why setting precedent is such a crucial lever for creating widespread change. Expansive Creativity and Community Building: The Everyday Artist Way with Bianca Gabrielle Wilson
Explicit
In this episode, I'm joined by multidisciplinary artist and EFT tapping practitioner Bianca Gabrielle Wilson, creator of The Everyday Artist, the virtual space where I've recorded this very podcast many times. We talk about what it means to expand our definition of creativity beyond the shoulds and supposed-to's, and why you can't force your nervous system to create when it doesn't feel safe. Bianca shares how tapping helps with the exhaustion, procrastination, and perfectionism that so often block us, and why being resourced is essential if we want to create something truly new in the world. We also get into her two big creative projects right now: her short film Last Man Standing, born from a truly astounding dating story you'll have to hear for yourself, and The Clovers, the all-Black women's beach volleyball team she built when the team she was looking for didn't exist yet. Both are beautiful examples of collective creativity and shared leadership, and of what becomes possible when you treat everyone as a leader. Follow Bianca on Instagram and YouTube at Bianca Gabrielle Wilson, and check out the film at lastmanstandingfilm on Instagram. The crowdfunding campaign kicks off on Friday, July 31st, and every little bit helps bring this film to life. "What Do You Mean By That?"
I'm starting a new interim executive director role, and in this episode I share the news and the full-circle moment it represents. My entry point into nonprofit work was nearly three decades ago as a hotline and shelter volunteer at the Center Against Rape and Domestic Violence in Corvallis, Oregon. Now I'm stepping in to support the WomenShelter of Long Beach as they approach their 50th anniversary. I also share a poem called All In, woven from what folks at La La La Lunch said karaoke and leadership have in common, and I dig into one of my favorite questions: What do you mean by that? It's a powerful tool for seeking to understand, deepening someone's own clarity, and even responding to passive-aggressive jokes. Plus a plug for the documentary American Agitators. A heads-up that I touch lightly on themes related to sexual violence and domestic violence in this episode, though I don't go into depth. La La La Lunch, Leadership, and Turning 47
This week I'm recapping retreat week, including how it all wrapped up with La La La Lunch, a karaoke gathering in my backyard for folks who are parenting and caregiving while doing mission-driven work. I share what the day looked like, the songs people were bold enough to sing, and the connections my guests made between karaoke and leadership. Spoiler: they delivered. Then, since I just turned 47, I walk through my birthday reflections using four questions: Where was I last year? Where do I want to be next year? What am I proud of? And what's one thing I want to do in the year ahead? I'd love to hear from you too. What are you most proud of from the last year? Let's Connect! www.drchristinepetit.com LinkedIn: Christine E. Live From Retreat Week
I'm reporting live from retreat week! Well, not so live, since I'll publish this. I recorded this one at El Dorado Park in Long Beach, no intro music, no editing, just one and done, imperfections and all. I share how the week is unfolding so far: morning check-ins with my coach, mapping the phases of my consulting journey on colored paper, the gratitude I have for my champions and super referrers, and the theme that keeps emerging for me: space. Let your work breathe. Let yourself breathe. I also talk about what's bubbling up, including Around the Fire, a group coaching offering to help you tend to your inner flame, and La La La Lunch, karaoke and catharsis for people who care. And I'm bringing back the closing coaching questions: What is asking you for space right now? What's one tiny step you can take to honor that? Taking the Long View: June Reflections
This episode is all about taking the long view. I had two coaching sessions early in June that both circled around this theme, and it's been something I've kept coming back to ever since. I share a situation where getting coached on what taking the long view of the relationship could look like completely shifted how I was holding it. I also talk about the fear that comes up around putting myself and my offers more visibly out into the world, and what it looked like to get coached on that from the perspective of my 93- or 97-year-old self (she's a little sassy, by the way). Then I get into a June recap. I'm sharing an update on my inner wise self love note challenge, some honest reflections about where I'm at with my body and starting hormone replacement therapy, and a look ahead to my business retreat and the La La La Lunch karaoke event I'm hosting for nonprofit and social impact parent-leaders in the Long Beach area. It's a lot, but it felt like the right time to document it all. Karaoke: A Love Story
I didn't always love karaoke. I used to think you had to be good at it. In this episode, I'm taking you through how that changed: sushi-bar karaoke nights in my early L.A. days, a surprise Mack the Knife from a fellow union leader, a conga line on Broadway that ended in my karaoke home, and yes, singing very pregnant trying to convince my breech daughter to flip. Along the way I share what karaoke has taught me about leadership — catharsis, play, community, and just letting yourself be all in. I'm also telling you why I'm hosting La La La Lunch, a daytime karaoke mixer on Friday, July 10th from noon–1:30 in Long Beach for nonprofit and social-impact leaders who are in the thick of parenting. Bring your own lunch, I'll bring the mic. Come sing, sing backup, or just sing along: https://tinyurl.com/LaLaLaLunch Let's Connect! www.drchristinepetit.com LinkedIn: Christine E.
