Episode notes
It’s another episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle, and this conversation goes everywhere—from Hispanic Heritage Month and the difference between Hispanic and Latino, to race, identity, stereotypes, incarceration, free speech, and the stories that shape how we see each other.
DVJ breaks down the history behind National Hispanic Heritage Month, why it runs from September 15 through October 15, and the difference between Hispanic, Latino, nationality, ethnicity, and race. The conversation explores how someone can be Hispanic and Black, White, Indigenous, Asian, or multiracial—and why those distinctions actually matter.
From there, the conversation gets much deeper. Race, colorism, stereotypes, cultural identity, and the ways different communities are perceived in America all come up. The discussion also touches on how race can influence the way missing people, crime, and entire communities are viewed.
And because this is Cold World, the conversation doesn't stay in one lane. 😂 There’s talk about massages, Chewy, laundry-room conversations, football, music, old-school entertainers, and some seriously unexpected detours.
The episode eventually circles back to the ongoing conversation about Israel and Palestine, Jewish identity, race, criticism, and free speech, including the question of whether criticizing a government or political actions should automatically be viewed as criticism of an entire group of people.
There’s also a discussion about Ed Sheeran, Macklemore, censorship, and artists speaking out about controversial issues, including whether powerful people and organizations can influence who gets heard.
No polished talking points. No pretending every conversation is comfortable.
Just DVJ and Michelle talking about race, culture, identity, politics, history, and everyday life the way they always do—honestly, openly, and without a filter.
Listen, think, disagree, agree—and tell us what YOU think.
