Why You Keep Waking Up at 3 AM

AI
You fall asleep fine. Then you are awake at 3 AM, staring at the ceiling, with no idea why. It happens to about one in three adults — and it is not random. We go through what is actually happening in those hours: the cortisol rise that begins before dawn, your core body temperature bottoming out and starting back up, what alcohol does to the back half of the night, and why the harder you try to get back to sleep, the more awake you become. Plus the one cause worth ruling out with a doctor — around thirty percent of adults have sleep apnea, and roughly eighty percent of those cases are undiagnosed. SOURCES: Ohayon et al., Sleep, 2004 — meta-analysis of quantitative sleep parameters across the lifespan Van Cauter et al., JAMA, 2000 — age-related slow-wave sleep decline in men US sleep apnea prevalence estimates, 2024 Written and fact-checked by Brent Burgess. Narration uses a synthetic voice model of his own voice. This episode is general education and is not medical advice. Sleep problems can have serious underlying causes — talk to your doctor before changing medication, supplements, or treatment.
