Episode notes
What happens when a show is too good to be loud about itself? You get Mum — a BBC comedy-drama that slipped quietly past most American viewers and never got the attention it deserved. In this episode, Michael T makes the case for why that needs to change.
Mum centers on Cathy, a recently widowed woman navigating grief, family chaos, and the unexpected possibility of love — all with a grace that will take your breath away. Lesley Manville delivers one of the finest performances in recent British television, saying more with a glance than most actors can do with a monologue. And she's surrounded by a cast that matches her beat for beat — including Lisa McGrillis, whose portrayal of the awkward, lovable Kelly is something you won't forget.
We'll break down what makes this show so special — the writing, the characters, the themes, and why you absolutely need to stick with it past the first episode. This one is worth celebrating.
