1 Corinthians 12:31—13:13 Psalm 33:2-3, 4-5, 12 and 22 Luke 7:31-35
Paul runs through everything a person could have — tongues, prophecy, knowledge, faith enough to move a mountain, even giving away everything he owns — and says without love it comes to nothing. Then he lists what love actually does, and it's all verbs. Patient. Kind. Not provoked. Bears, believes, hopes, endures. The psalm says play skillfully and sing a new song, which is work, not a mood. And then Luke shows you the opposite: a generation sitting in the marketplace with a complaint ready for everybody. John fasted and they called him possessed. Jesus ate with them and they called him a drunk. Refusing costs nothing and proves nothing. Wisdom gets proved by her children — by what comes out of her, not by what she says about herself.
