1957: Sixty miles north of the Azores. A Soviet marine geologist named Maria Klenova pulls rock samples from six thousand feet below the surface — and finds atmospheric-weathering patterns. Meaning above water in the geologically recent past.

The Azores Plateau covers 400,000 square kilometers. Its crust is 20 to 30 kilometers thick — closer to continental than oceanic. UNESCO's own listing acknowledges that many of its seamounts were emerged islands in the past. The seven main inhabited Azorean islands match the exact number of Atlantic islands the ancient historian Marcellus described as preserving the memory of Atlantis.
