Ep. 109 Ian Boswell; Breakfast with Boz

Ian Boswell, aka Boz, spent several years racing at the highest level in the UCI World Tour with the likes of Bradly Wiggins, Chris Froome and Garaint Thomas on Team Sky. After nearly a decade in Europe, he made the decision to retire from road racing, move to rural Vermont and settle in with his young family. He kept a foot in the door of cycling and started a podcast: Breakfast with Boz as well as working at Wahoo Fitness, representing the company at gravel race expos around the U.S. and at one point, decided to bring his bike and line up in the event - and his legs did not fail him. In 2021 he and Laurens Ten Dam raced into Emporia Kansas at Unbound and Boz found himself standing on the top step of the podium. He now enjoys a balanced life racing in the events he chooses, representing Wahoo, publishing his podcast and enjoying time with his family in Vermont. One of the races he enjoys, and helped grow, is Gravel Locos. Fabian Sarralta, Director of that race, was a guest on Bike Talk with Dave (Episode 57) so I was curious what Boz's connection was with the Hico, Texas race. In this episode we talk about Ian's years at Team Sky and Katusha, his retirement from road racing and transition into the U.S. gravel scene. Follow Ian on Instagram and Facebook and tune into his weekly podcast: Breakfast with Boz. Consider supporting Bike Talk with Dave by rating, reviewing and sharing on your favorite podcast platform. Ep. 108 Steve McGuire and Lessons from the Tuscobia 160

Steve McGuire - my guide and mentor for the 2025 Arrowhead 135 Winter Fat Bike Ultra - recently returned from the oddly snowless Tuscobia 160 Winter Ultra and wanted to share the lessens he learned from this winter's event. The Tuscobia 160 starts in Rice Lake Wisconsin and follows the Tuscobia Trail through the Chequamgon/Nicolet National Forest the last weekend in December. Both a 160- as well as an 80-mile event are offered for fat bikes, skis or on foot. Find out more at www.tuscobiawinterultra.com. Ep. 107 Jay Kennedy and Thirsty Pigs Mobile Event Co. w/ Wade Thompson

Jay Kennedy swung his years of experience in the hospitality industry into a business that combined that with his passion for cycling - the Thirsty Pigs Mobile Event Company. With Thirsty Pigs, he does everything from planning and leading multi-day cycling trips (such as the Marathon and Key West rides in Florida this February!) as well offering complete event planning services for corporate events, reunions, social gatherings, bicycling rides, weddings, tail-gates, birthday parties and more. Thirsty Pigs works closely with a Des Moines area bar, patio and music venue situated on the Des Moines River - Captain Roy's, which is owned and operated by a long-time cycling friend and cycling community supporter (and incredible musician) Wade Thompson. The three of us met at Wades over the Holidays and talked about Thirsty Pigs, Roy's and so much more... like music! (I did manage to sneak in some music from Wade's band; A Complete Disaster w/ Mike Vallely (yes, the skateboarder!), Eli Clark, Paul Thompson and Wade Thompson). Connect with Jay and book a trip or event with Thirsty Pigs at www.thirstypigs.com and give them a follow on instagram and facebook! Ep. 106 Hannah Otto, Mountain Biker, Gravel Cyclist and Cycling Coach

Hannah Finchamp Otto has been racing since before she was 10, first as a triathlete and now, after two Xterra World Triathlon Championships as a top professional dirt cyclist racing in the Lifetime Grand Prix, finishing ninth in 2023, which included top-5 finishes in each of the three mountain bike events, even scoring a victory at the Leadville 100 in 2022! She recently scored a silver at the three-day mountain bike stage race across Costa Rica La Ruta de los Conquistadors. In her spare time (!) she puts her degree in Exercise Science and wealth of knowledge and experience from cycling and triathlon to use and started coaching other athletes to help them chase their goals. She is free with her advice on her instagram feed at @hannah_finchamp and blogs about her experiences racing as well as her coaching at https://hannahfinchamp.com/about-me/ Consider supporting Bike Talk with Dave by rating, reviewing and sharing on your favorite podcast platform. Ep. 105 Ken Krueger, Arrowhead 135 Race Director

As part of my prep to start - and hopefully finish- the Arrowhead 135, a 135-mile winter fat bike ultra starting in International Falls, Minnesota in January, I wanted to talk to the director of the event: Ken Krueger. In this episode he talks about what it takes to prepare for and complete what has been described as one of the 50 hardest races in the world. For more information on this race and begin YOUR journey to northern Minnesota you can open the Pandora's box of winter ultra fat biking (as well as skiing and running!) at www.arrowheadultra.com. Ep. 104 The Journey to the Arrowhead 135 with Steve McGuire

As a cyclist I've competed in many disciplines, from road racing and criteriums to mountain bikes, gravel and cyclocross. Even a little track racing! But there's one discipline I've never done: A Winter Fat Bike Ultra. So, with the mentorship of Steve McGuire, a winter fatbike veteran (Alaska, Iceland, Wisconsin, Minnesota and more), I'm embarking on a journey to the 2025 Arrowhead 135. That is a mid-winter fat bike race through the remote northwoods forests from International Falls to Tower Minnesota along the Arrowhead trail. In this episode Steve and I introduce the project and then begin with one of the topics to help me prepare: Proper clothing. While I've raced in some of the coldest and worst conditions around, I've always had a warm house, car or hotel waiting for me at the end of my ride. The Arrowhead can take as long as 60 hours over two nights and temperatures can reach more than forty degrees below zero. Wind, snow and even rain can make conditions even more challenging. So tune in today and join Dave as he explores with Steve McGuire how to conquer what is considered one of the 50 hardest races on earth! Check out the Arrowhead 135 at https://arrowheadultra.com/. And tune in to episode no. 105 for a conversation with Arrowhead Race Director Ken Krueger. Check out the previous episodes with Steve McGuire as he talks about his rides in Alaska and Iceland as well as the Design, Build Ride program he leads at the University of Iowa in Episodes 53 and 54!
