Understanding Students and Violence-Rerun

Adult Learners and Student Veterans, especially those raising children, must increase their understanding of violence in our society. The ongoing exposure to shootings, rapes, murders, and conflicts in our world is difficult to avoid if you use the Internet, watch TV, or attend school. Let’s continue encouraging each other to “make sense of the senseless” and seek to understand and minimize the tragedies of the many innocents like Trayvon Martin, Christopher Lane, Syrian children, and our Veterans. Much of the violence we are experiencing in schools is blamed on students diagnosed with a mental disorder. However, society must take on some responsibility for the exposure to violence in early childhood. Join Dr. Applewhite and Special Guest Midge Noble, Child and Family Therapist and Author in a very candid discussion that will help us understand how violent tendencies may begin and how to manage them.

The Impact of Stress, As It Relates to War, School, and Work

Students in classes from pre-school to graduate levels experience the impact of stress related to war, violence, and/or trauma. However, stress is subjective and all human beings react differently based on their genetic make-up, personality, experiences, and environment. Adult Learners with PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder experience stress or anxiety. People suffering from PTSD experience paranoia, flashbacks and generally have difficulty handling everyday pressures of work and school schedules. In addition, the competition for present and future jobs is another source of great stress for most Adult Learners. Dr. Applewhite and guests will discuss ways to minimize the impact of stress reported by Adult Learners and Student Veterans regarding conflicts in Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, African countries and other places around the world. Threatening and Shooting Students Gets Attention

Listen to what Adult Learners, Teachers and Student Veterans are saying about why attention is finally being paid to persons with mental illness. Michael Hill was arrested for firearm possession on school premises in Decatur, Georgia. Unfortunately, there is more emphasis being placed on his diagnoses of Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia than the violence in our society. It is an injustice that no one paid attention to his needs until he became a “real” threat.
