#32 Boots on the Ground, Dust in the Air & Hearts on the Line

In this episode, we dig into the dust—literally and figuratively. First, we shine a spotlight on the Australian Defence Force’s deployment to the Mid North Coast during recent flood events and ask the question on many QLD farmers’ minds: "Where was this response when we were underwater—or on fire?" It's a hard conversation, but one that deserves attention. Then, it’s not just frustrations in the air—it’s red dust, and plenty of it. We talk about the intense dust storms rolling into NSW from drought-stricken regions of Victoria and South Australia, and how it’s affecting air quality, mental health, and everyday rural life. We also celebrate a beautiful grassroots movement from rural mental health champion Katie O’Brien: “Check Your Mates, Open Gates”. Her Tuesday Call a Friend initiative is sparking honest conversations, neighbourly care, and rural resilience. And of course, it wouldn’t be a weekly wrap without a FWAW (Farmer Wants a Wife) update. We break down the latest drama, heartfelt moments, and what the show’s teaching (or not teaching) about real life on the land. Mentioned in This Episode: Australian Defence Force Flood Response Dust & Air Quality Monitoring NSW Katie O'Brien’s Initiative: "Check Your Mates, Open Gates" Farmer Wants a Wife (weekly Review) 🚜 THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS! 💻 Farm Table – Your online hub for all things ag, connecting farmers with resources, events, and opportunities. 26 Are Hobby Farmers Helping or Hurting Ag? Plus, Farm Safety Concerns

.opic 1: The Hidden Dangers of Side-by-Sides on Farms Despite being initially considered a safer alternative to quad bikes, side-by-side vehicles have become the leading cause of fatalities on Australian farms. Even with built-in safety features such as seatbelts and rollover protection cages, these vehicles were involved in 14 farm-related deaths last year. We break down the risks, discuss why these accidents are happening, and explore what can be done to improve safety for farmers and farm workers alike. Q&A Segment 💡 Merch Idea: Gillian’s famous quote, “If you fail to participate, you forfeit your right to complain.” We’re thinking this needs to go on a t-shirt or jumper—what do you think? 👀 Favorite article of the week: Stock Journal’s piece where Katja likened succession planning to sex! We need to hear more about this one. 👉 Check it out here: Stock Journal Article 🎙 Podcast Love: Shoutout to all our listeners who are eagerly awaiting the launch of Gillian’s Suck-Session podcast and continuing to support The Ultimate Farm Wife! 🔥 Clearing the Air: We’ve been chatting about Farmer Wants a Wife on Agsolutley Fabulous, and some of our comments may have come across as contradictory. On one hand, we advocate for women in agriculture, but on the other, we’ve expressed skepticism about the contestants’ transitions into farm life. Let’s clarify our stance—because supporting women in ag doesn’t mean blindly endorsing every situation. Topic 2: The Great Hobby Farmer Showdown This week, we tackle the long-standing debate: Hobby farmers—are they good for agriculture, or are they just playing farm dress-up? In this showdown, Katja takes the affirmative, arguing that hobby farmers bring fresh enthusiasm, diversify the industry, and play a crucial role in bridging the urban-rural divide. On the flip side, Gillian argues against, questioning whether hobby farmers truly contribute to the industry or if they’re merely inflating land prices and skewing public perceptions of real farming. Who wins the debate? Tune in to find out! 🎧 Listen Now & Join the Conversation! 💬 Follow us on social media and tell us what you think about this week’s topics. 📩 Got a question or a hot topic?
