Communicating in High Conflict Situations

We all know communication is hard work. In this episode, Samuel and Dr. Kelly share how to enact active listening as well as practice skills that help couples survive high conflict situations. Mentioned in this podcast is the resource "Crucial Conversations" a book by Grenny, McMillan, and Switzler. Here is a note about this book: When stakes are high, opinions vary, and emotions run strong, you have three choices: Avoid a crucial conversation and suffer the consequences; handle the conversation badly and suffer the consequences; or read Crucial Conversations and discover how to communicate best when it matters most. Crucial Conversations gives you the tools you need to step up to life's most difficult and important conversations, say what's on your mind, and achieve the positive resolutions you want. You'll learn how to: Prepare for high-impact situations with a six-minute mastery technique Make it safe to talk about almost anything Be persuasive, not abrasive Keep listening when others blow up or clam up Turn crucial conversations into the action and results you want To find more about: Dr. Kelly search for Kelly Bonewell on Instagram|Facebook|Twitter Samuel search for @wisdomcentercounseling on Instagram|Facebook

Essential Elements of a Mentor Meeting

Today Samuel and Kelly did a quick look at the essentials of a mentoring meeting. Those elements would include 1) Listening, 2) Information and biblical wisdom, 3) homework and accountability and 4) Prayer. During the podcast, we talked about an important book entitled The Unexpected Legacy of Divorce by Judith Wallerstein. This excerpt is from the publisher: In this compelling, thought-provoking book, Judith Wallerstein explains that, while children do learn to cope with divorce, it in fact takes its greatest toll in adulthood, when the sons and daughters of divorced parents embark on romantic relationships of their own. Wallerstein sensitively illustrates how children of divorce often feel that their relationships are doomed, seek to avoid conflict, and fear commitment. Failure in their loving relationships often seems to them preordained, even when things are going smoothly. As Wallerstein checks in on the adults she first encountered as youngsters more than twenty-five years ago, she finds that their experiences mesh with those of the millions of other children of divorce, who will find themselves on every page.
