Market Update for November 11th 2024
After Trump's US Presidential win on Wednesday, equity markets exploded, capturing their largest weekly gain since the first week of November 2023. The FOMC ("the Fed") also came together last week for their November meeting and dropped the overnight rate by 0.25%, which further stoked an already bullish week. The economy remains strong and, with President-elect Trump coming in as the 47th president, the market seems to be back in "risk-on" mode as a remarkable year for equity returns enters its final phase. This week, I discuss: The impact of the election on equity markets but also bonds and the dollar, My thoughts on why certain stocks went through the roof and others struggled with the news of Trump's second term, and Why keeping a log of your trades is not only a good idea, but arguably a necessary tool for trading and investing success. Pantile Investments' Principal David Baines recaps what happened in the US stock market last week and what it means for your trading in the week to come.
Market Update for November 4th 2024
Last week, we saw a good chunk of the "Magnificent 7" report Q3 earnings (AAPL, GOOG, MSFT, META, and AMZN) and while they beat on earnings and revenue, the prices of all by one (AMZN) pulled back due to a reduction in forward guidance. Next week, the US Presidential Election could introduce near-term market volatility and the FOMC will have its November meeting. The CME's FedWatch Tool is showing a 98.9% probability of a 0.25% interest rate cut at that meeting. This week, I discuss: How the S&P 500's earnings have fared in Q3 and YTD relative to past periods, What elections can do to equity markets in the near-term but what history shows us about November and December performance in election years, and Why professional traders sit on their hands when amateur traders over-trade. Pantile Investments' Principal David Baines recaps what happened in the US stock market last week and what it means for your trading in the week to come.
Market Update for October 28th 2024
Happy Halloween week! The economy continues to show strength in its key indicators as inflation continues to come down and the labor market cools. But is the "lower for longer" policy from the FOMC in regards to its lengthy interest rate easing process causing bonds to be more attractive than equities? Are we in a bull run or a wait-and-see pattern? What does that mean for the remainder of the year for the stock market? This week, I discuss: The relationship between bond yields and the equity market, What the market is telling us about future rate cuts and the election, and Why starting with small bets as a new trader is the secret to long-term success. Pantile Investments' Principal David Baines recaps what happened in the US stock market last week and what it means for your trading in the week to come.
Market Update for October 14th 2024
The market finally looks like it's breaking out which is a great sign for Q4: Nvidia released bullish news and the market reacted well to it, the S&P 500 was up 4 of the 5 trading days last week to finish at all-time highs, and the Q3 earnings train continues to roll through town with good results. September CPI is flat at 3.3% and the market is pricing in a 0.25% in each of the last two FOMC meetings in November and December. This week, I discuss: What history teaches us about bull runs and how long they last, Why hard stops in your portfolio can save your capital, and The difference between diversification and "over" diversification. Pantile Investments' Principal David Baines recaps what happened in the US stock market last week and what it means for your trading in the week to come.
Market Update for October 7th 2024
The last quarter of the year has commenced and it begins with great economic reports in jobs and unemployment on the plus side, but a (temporarily resolved) shipping strike and a flare up in Middle East tensions on the negative side. US stock markets are above mid-July highs, but it seems everyone is waiting for everyone else to dip a toe in the bullish pool before diving in themselves. This week, I discuss: How to think about news such as strikes and war developments in your trading, Why the cup and handle pattern is one of my favorites, and Why patience in your trading can lead to profits. Pantile Investments' Principal David Baines recaps what happened in the US stock market last week and what it means for your trading in the week to come.
Market Update for September 30th 2024
Last week, the US stock markets staggered above their July highs but the end of the quarter saw some minor selloffs. As we enter Q4, however, economic data continues to be strong with the Q2 GDP revision coming in at 3% and China has announced a massive stimulus package that could have some very positive impacts on the US equity and commodities markets. The stage is seemingly set for a bullish final quarter of 2024. This week, I discuss: The positive leading economic indicators that make me believe Q4 could be bullish, Why it pays to look at the macroeconomic factors that impact your stocks such as foreign government policy and commodity prices, and Why risk management in your trading is absolutely critical to trading success. Pantile Investments' Principal David Baines recaps what happened in the US stock market last week and what it means for your trading in the week to come.
Market Update for September 23rd 2024
Well, we finally got the FOMC rate cut we were hoping for. The 0.50% rate cut was announced on Wednesday and the S&P 500 and Dow Jones indexes hit all-time highs on Thursday, with the NASDAQ lagging behind only slightly. With the last quarter of the year in front of us, it’s time to see if the bulls will take the wheel and bring home a strong 2024 with a strong final quarter. This week I discuss: How earnings drive stock prices and what to look for in earnings trends, the pattern of selloffs after quarter-ends in 2024 and why that’s so, and why sitting on your hands can be as profitable (or more so) than trading bad setups. Pantile Investments' Principal David Baines recaps what happened in the US stock market last week and what it means for your trading in the week to come.
Market Update for September 16 2024
Two weeks ago, we saw another massive sell off in the US stock market but, last week, technology moved back into favor to drive the market back to its highs. With a probable Fed rate cut coming this Wednesday, how will the market react? Will investors jump back into the big tech names that made the first half of 2024 such a boon? This week could be a pivotal inflection point to indicate how the rest of 2024 will pan out for US stocks. Pantile Investments' Principal David Baines recaps what happened in the US stock market last week and what it means for your trading in the week to come.
