On Monday the president announced that Mesabi Metallics will invest about $15 billion in a steel plant in southeast Iowa, with up to 1,750 permanent jobs and about 6,000 construction jobs, per CNBC and CBS News. The first phase is to make about 7.5 million tons of steel a year, ramping to 10 million, with production starting in 2030, and a White House official told CNBC it would be the largest of its kind in U.S. history. The iron ore comes from the company's own mine on Minnesota's Iron Range. The company told CNBC it will be "100% American steel: mined, melted and poured in Minnesota and Iowa."
