Hieroglyphs is the text for the ancient Egyptian language. It was used for over 5 000 years. Only the elite and wealthy in Egypt could read and write. Scribes were at the temples or palace. It is believed that the ordinary Egyptian could at least read and write his name and acknowledge the name of the king in texts.
