Chapter 17: I Draw the Line at Torture

This week, Em and Jordy get their sea legs ready for the second installment in Alina’s trilogy and our third foray into the Grishaverse, Leigh Bardugo’s Siege and Storm! As always, we will be tackling Siege five chapters at a time starting with this episode. In case you forgot (like we did), last we left Alina and Mal they were on the lam from Ravka, unsure of their future and uncaring, allegedly, about what happens to Ravka in their absence. Chapter 14: Oofta - Recipes!. . . for Disaster

Em and Jordy are in a silly goofy mood - are you shocked? - as they cover chapters 36-40 of Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows. We open with possibly one of Jordy’s favorite quotes of all time, but we quickly change topic to accents. You’ll want to listen to this one, not just because we are hurtling towards the climax of Crows at the speed of 1 million character development moments per page, but also because Em and Jordy talk about family recipes. And right around the holidays, too! Meanwhile, our Crows find out the shocking truth - the Shu scientist they risked it all for is long dead, but his teenage son has been forced to carry out his work. Chapter 11: Pros & Cons, Baby

Get it? Because they’re con men? I’ll see myself out. Em and Jordy are back this week with chapters 21-25 of Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows! Trigger warning for epidemic/pandemic talk, corpses, extensive discussion of death and illness, and trauma. Content starts at 00:29:01 and concludes at 00:42:25 We start strong with some pros and cons and then jump right into the meat of today’s episode. Our heroes (antiheroes?) have made their way into the city surrounding the Ice Court. They celebrate by planning the details of their heist and eating some cookies. Unfortunately, that is the only bit of sweetness we get in this installment because we finally learn why Kaz wears gloves, and it’s not pretty. After a hefty flashback, our cast of Crows put their plan into motion. . . by intentionally getting locked into prison? Six Crows, three ringwalls, and a few hours. What could go wrong? Chapter 10: A Druskelle Walks into a Bar

What’s this? Why, it’s 5 more chapters of Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows! This week, Em and Jordy rifle through chapters 16-20, one trauma at a time. There are a handful of trigger-warnings for this episode, as Crows is an intense book that deftly deals with real-world problems: 00:12:15 - 00:16:30 Mentions of human trafficking 1:46:15 - 1:50:05 Mentions of mutilation, gore, and dead bodies Inej avoids a future career as a pin cushion, Jesper enjoys a walk above deck and thinks about his self worth, Kaz gathers his courage and we learn some of his incredibly sad backstory, Wylan pouts, and Nina and Matthais reflect on their pained, though achingly lovely, history together. Chapter 9: A Dessert Table of Traumas

This week Em and Jordy tackle chapters 11-15 of Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows! A trigger-warning for discussion of knife work, violence, mutilation, and gore. Discussion starts at 52:36 and ends at 54:14. We catch up with our heroes as they board the Ferolind, which we thought blew up in the last episode, but (spoiler) did not, because as we learned in Shadow and Bone, loose lips sink ships, and Kaz Brekker plans for every contingency. What he does not plan for, however, is how much he loves Inej. Our teenage cast navigates emotional constipation, flashes back to their tragic backstories, and Em and Jordy freak out over how much they love Nina and Matthais. Happy Heisting!

Chapter 8: The Wheel of "Oh No"

This week, Em and Jordy continue their journey into Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows with chapters 6-10. A trigger-warning: this episode strongly discusses non-consenual sex work, sexual assault, and coercion. Content starts at 1:29:04 and ends at 1:36:30. We kick off strong with a smoggy gondola ride to fantasy-Alcatraz, otherwise known as Hellgate, to pick up Em’s one true love: Matthias Helvar, our sixth crow. This crazy jailbreak completes our crew of Crows: Kaz, the schemer, Inej the Wraith, Jesper the sharpshooter, Nina the Heartrender, Matthias the soldier, and Wylan the “demolitions expert.” After some tiffs and character development, we have a rather explosive ending.
