Bank props up a slipping baht while Thai unions strongly pursue ฿492 minimum daily wage claim

The slow return of the foreign tourism industry and rising living costs were among the reasons given by JP Morgan as it downgraded its investor rating for both Thai equities and the kingdom’s industrial sector last Monday. The kingdom’s more than adequate Foreign Exchange Reserves dropped by 5.7% in April with reports that the Bank of Thailand has been intervening to prop up the baht against the dollar even as it gained ground against both the euro and pound sterling. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/05/08/bank-of-thailand-props-up-baht-as-unions-seek-pay-rise/ Joseph O' Connor reports from Bangkok.

Phuket murder hit suspect dies in Canadian plane crash days after being declared ‘most wanted’ by police

From the moment the two hitmen stepped back onto Canadian soil last February after the murder of crime figure Jimmy Sandhu, their fortunes began to unravel. 36-year-old Matthew Dupre sits in custody in Alberta as he fights extradition to Thailand while his alleged partner in the assassination of Mr Sandhu, Gene Karl Lahrkamp has been declared dead in a plane crash last Saturday while on the run as a fugitive. The hitmen found themselves pursued not only by police in Canada and Thailand but also by both rival gangs with links to Sandhu who they mercilessly gunned down at his villa in Phuket on February 4th last. This followed a robust, lightning speed and highly successful police investigation which identified the pair to the world. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/05/04/phuket-murderer-dies-in-canadian-plane-crash-gene-karl-lahrkamp/ James Morris reports from British Columbia and Phuket.

Thailand and Japan announce defence pact on visit by Japanese PM to Bangkok ahead of US summit

Western powers are moving to counter China’s expansionism in the region with the Quad pact in 2017 and the AUKUS military alliance between the United States, United Kingdom and Australia in September last year which is seen as a significant escalation of efforts to address the threat the Communist Party-led country poses to stability in the Indo Pacific. In past decades, Thailand was at the forefront of such efforts as a key US ally. The question today is the role Thailand will play in this new cold war between an even more powerful China and an increasingly assertive and bolder United States determined to re-establish its position in the region in what it sees as an effort to preserve peace but which China views as a last gasp attempt to reimpose American hegemony and old fashioned colonialism over a part of the world that wants to go its own way towards a new era of Asian prosperity and leadership. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/05/03/thailand-japan-announce-defence-pact/ Joseph O' Connor reports from Bangkok.

Officials in Phuket led by Deputy Governor Pichet Panapong have assured the mother of the boy in this latest incident that everything possible is being done to respond to any potential danger and protect the public using the beaches on the island, among the most popular in the world which, in the past, have attracted up to 10 million visitors a year. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/05/02/shark-attack-on-8-year-old-boy-in-phuket/ James Morris reports from Phuket.

Cash is still king in Thailand with a cashless society not on the cards anytime soon says study

It had been thought that with high smartphone penetration among the population and the widespread use of digital apps for payments during the pandemic, a transition to a cashless society had begun. The answer, according to a survey of 6,020 people, is unequivocal. No, it has not. 65% of users who took up Krung Thai Bank’s Pao Tang app to avail of government financial supports have opted to no longer use it while cash is seen to have an edge under every criterion. It is seen as more convenient, more widely accepted, cheaper and more private. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/05/01/cash-still-king-people-reject-app-payments/ Carla Boonkong reports from Bangkok
