First monkeypox case in a woman as fears grow that its stigma may be its most dangerous aspect

Leading social development expert says that the current discussion about the source of monkeypox infections is leading to both homophobic and xenophobic discourse as the Department of Disease Control mulls who to target with vaccines against the disease and if they will come to get them. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/08/08/monkeypox-case-in-a-woman-stigma-fears/ James Morris reports from Bangkok.

No circuit breaker at death trap nightlife spot in Sattahip, Chonburi as 15 people die in blaze

Top engineer says Thailand does not yet seem to have learned lessons from the Santika nightclub fire in Bangkok in 2009 which killed 66 people in New Year’s Eve celebrations as an extensive survey is launched in Bangkok and other provinces probing entertainment venues with 83 already shuttered in the capital and more expected to follow as 19 people fight for their lives in hospital on ventilators after Friday morning’s nightmare inferno. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/08/07/no-circuit-breaker-at-death-trap-nightclub-mountain-b/ Carla Boonkong reports from Chonburi and Bangkok.

China asserts sovereignty over Taiwan with fears of an attack by 2024 and a blockade of the island

China’s diplomatic efforts are now countered by a larger diplomatic presence in the region on behalf of the United States and Japan as Foreign Minister Wang Yi walked out of a Phnom Penh gala dinner this week. On Thursday, the communist country reminded Thailand of its commitment to the One China principle by which Bangkok recognises its sovereignty over the renegade island while it engaged in the largest military drill in its history just 20km off Taiwan as it simulated a blockade of the island by sea and air as its forces encircled it at six points. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/08/05/china-may-act-by-2024-to-blockade-taiwan/ Joseph O' Connor reports from Bangkok and Phnom Penh.

Girlfriend of German tourist infected with monkeypox tests negative in Phuket for the virus

Authorities in Phuket this week confirmed that the 25-year-old German man who is believed to have picked up the infection abroad is neither homosexual nor bisexual. The foreign tourist entered Thailand and first began to suffer symptoms on July 23rd with blisters spreading on his body until he sought medical attention last Tuesday at a private hospital on the island where a monkeypox infection was confirmed. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/08/04/german-girlfriend-negative-for-monkeypox/ James Morris reports from Phuket and Bangkok.

Thai economy in an upswing with over 1 million foreign tourists in July powering higher GDP gains

Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha expressed optimism about the economic situation on Tuesday saying the kingdom’s prospects had not been as good since 2017. However, it will still be next year before Thailand recovers its economic equilibrium after the disastrous 2020 setback when the economy contracted by 6.1%. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/08/03/economic-upswing-1-million-tourists-a-month/ Carla Boonkong reports from Bangkok.

Prayut retains all the cards as Thailand may be pivoting back to a one-ballot election process

Political naiveté on the part of the leading Pheu Thai Party in believing that the coalition government, through the electoral reform process, was going to gift it the means to achieve an outright majority. This has been evident since April this year and yet the party continued with the charade. Now with an impressive victory in the censure debate in July and changes underway to see a return to the one ballot voting process, not only is the government looking like it will survive until a snap election is called but there is now an increased likelihood of a return of a coalition government if not led by General Prayut Chan ocha then by his ‘brother in arms’ General Prawit Wongsuwan. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/08/01/prayut-has-the-cards-with-one-ballot-pivot/ Joseph O' Connor reports from Bangkok.

Possible crisis brewing over electoral reform bills as Minister says July 6th change cannot work in practice

On Thursday, in response to Minister Somsak’s warning about the viability of electoral reforms being put into practice, the Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul did not dismiss the concerns raised but suggested that he would win his seat as a constituency MP and that his party would work with whatever electoral system is being used. Mr Somsak had said that Mr Anutin’s party may be critical in finding a resolution to the present conundrum which has the potential to derail forthcoming elections if not clarified. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/07/22/possible-crisis-brewing-over-election-count/ Joseph O' Connor reports from Bangkok.

41-year-old son appears in court after shooting his mother to death on Friday in central Bangkok

Man appears to have killed his mother when tensions over business matters and his consumption of alcohol boiled over on Friday night. It is thought he used a 9mm Colt revolver to shoot the woman twice in the stomach before threatening to kill himself and his family before police successfully intervened. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2022/07/31/son-appears-in-court-after-shooting-mother-kelvin-shuo-gao/ James Morris reports from Bangkok.
