Digital ID, Surveillance & Power: Convenience or Control?

The hosts discuss how identity has shifted from physical documents to interconnected data and argue the main risk isn’t the technology but the power infrastructure around it when digital ID, surveillance cameras, transactions, and government systems share the same networks. They compare potential outcomes to China’s surveillance state, including blacklists and punishment through access to banking, jobs, and benefits, and question whether Canada’s digital ID rollout could enable similar abuses over time. They emphasize that data never disappears, can be used years later, and can be exploited by governments, corporations, or opportunists, especially during crises such as protests or terrorist attacks. The episode calls for scrutiny of who controls identity systems, what safeguards exist, and what happens when rules change after the cameras and databases are already in place.

When Is It Too Late? Holocaust Lessons, Risk, and Rising Antisemitism | Redacted Opinions

Host Luciano Cedroni speaks with co-host and author Brian Claman about his book, When Is It Too Late? Holocaust Lessons on Risk, Decision Making and the Failure to Act, and how Holocaust-era warning signs can inform risk decisions in the post–October 7th world. Claman explains that stories of Jewish doctors leaving Canada due to safety concerns prompted him to research rising antisemitism, hate-crime data, and the psychology of when waiting becomes a decision. They discuss loss of confidence in institutions and authorities, normalization of antisemitism in public life, and the dangers of silence and complacency, while stressing that Canada today is not Nazi Germany. Claman shares Statistics Canada figures on hate crimes targeting Jews and urges civic engagement, education, and accountability to prevent further democratic erosion.

Media Spin, and How to Think Critically About News

On Redacted Opinions, Luciano Cedrone and Brian Claman discuss how journalism can influence audiences through story selection, terminology, headlines, and expert framing, sparked by an internal CBC memo instructing journalists covering the 9/11 anniversary not to use the word “terrorism” unless attributed. They argue 9/11 fits the definition of terrorism and criticize legacy outlets for political correctness, blurred language (e.g., “terrorists” vs “militants”), and agenda-driven coverage, citing examples including October 7 and outlets like BBC, CNN, and Fox. They explore how commercial incentives, 24-hour news, and the Gulf War accelerated sensationalism, and how social media both enables independent voices and fuels clickbait via algorithms that reward anger. They urge viewers to separate news from opinion, facts from claims, look beyond headlines, cross-check sources, and think critically

Foreign Interference & Transnational Repression in Canada

Luciano Cedone and Brian Claman discuss foreign interference in Canada through the lens of transnational repression - foreign governments intimidating people in Canada, pressuring families overseas, and using proxy or criminal networks to carry out violence without deploying agents on Canadian soil. They argue this is an attack on Canadian sovereignty and note CSIS has identified it as a national security concern, while government response seems to be indifferent and politically constrained. The conversation cites the March 10, 2026 shooting at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto and the June 11, 2026 high-risk warrant execution in North York during which Toronto Police constable Mark Pinizzotto was shot and later died, emphasizing real-world consequences even if foreign direction is unproven. They highlight Canada’s low perceived costs for hostile actors and the intelligence-to-evidence gap that complicates prosecutions.

Is Canada’s Security Clearance System Putting NATO at Risk?

Hosts Luciano Cerdone and Brian Claman examine the arrest of Biwe Claire Zhang, a Canadian citizen and IT intern at NATO’s SHAPE headquarters in Mons, Belgium. Despite reportedly undergoing screening through multiple Canadian institutions and holding a Canadian security clearance, Zhang was arrested by Belgian authorities on suspicion of espionage-related activity. The case raises serious questions about weaknesses in Canada’s security-clearance, immigration-vetting and ongoing-monitoring processes. The discussion explores why security clearances can become overly static, insufficiently scrutinized and renewed too infrequently—creating opportunities for insider threats. Foreign intelligence services often recruit vulnerable or entry-level employees and cultivate them over many years. Drawing lessons from previous Canadian security breaches involving Jeffrey Delisle and Cameron Ortis, the hosts also examine government silos, information-sharing failures and political decisions that may override professional security assessments. Canada must strengthen initial vetting, introduce more active monitoring and treat national security with the seriousness required to maintain the confidence of NATO and Five Eyes allies.

The Double-Edged Sword of Force

Is Force What Holds Society Together—or Tears It Apart? | Redacted Opinions S1E8 In Season 1, Episode 8 of Redacted Opinions, the hosts debate whether society is held together by the threat of legitimate force or by broader consequences that don’t require violence. They argue over the difference between violence, force, and consequence; when force is justified; and how misuse of state power can erode public trust and legitimacy. The conversation references Canadian examples including traffic enforcement, the trucker convoy and the Emergency Act, gun policy, immigration, and concerns about political overreach, along with historical parallels like the Civil War and French Revolution to discuss when violence becomes a last resort. They conclude that public safety depends on keeping force strong enough to deter threats but disciplined enough to avoid turning into abuse, and invite listeners to weigh in and engage online.

Crisis Communications Gone Wrong

In this episode of Redacted Opinions, the hosts discuss why crisis communications must be planned in advance as part of emergency management, business continuity, stakeholder protection, and public trust. They review cases where communications failed under pressure: the July 8–9, 2022 Rogers national outage that disrupted 911 and left Rogers’ own incident staff unable to communicate without buying SIM cards; the Lac-Mégantic rail disaster where Montreal, Maine & Atlantic was criticized for protecting reputation over truth and later went out of business; the 2019 LifeLabs cyberattack affecting sensitive health data and undermining trust; and the 2019 Desjardins breach that went undetected for 26 months and led to a settlement framework over a quarter billion dollars. They contrast these with Maple Leaf’s listeria response and emphasize fast, coordinated, consistent messaging and empowering trained staff to act.
