Magnetic Words
I sat in another therapy session with my young child hoping for a tangible piece of advice to get us moving from chaos to calm. We were desperate for help . . . relief . . . answers.
I was willing to do just about anything to help our son learn to cope with all the big feelings he had swirling within. We had tried everything we knew to do.
We walked away with a few words to say in moments of chaos, anxiety, or desperation. These words are widely used and known by many in the mental health field, and there is a good reason why.
Here they are:
“I see you.”
“I hear you.”
“I’m with you.”
Connecting isn’t a new parenting technique. It was first created and modeled by our Savior.
“When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.” Mark 6:34
Over and over in the Bible, we see Jesus connecting by seeing, hearing, and being with the people He served. This method of love in action gives us a model to follow that brings us together.
It is a simple way for a parent and child to be drawn closer rather than farther apart. As you go through your day today, try saying these words with your child:
“I see you.”
“I hear you.”
“I’m with you.”
Work on connecting and using these magnetic words to bring near. The goal isn’t to make everything perfect; it’s simply to practice connection.
Prayer for today:
Dear God, I want to connect with You. I know You see me, hear me, and are with me. Help me model this same love You have for me with my child. I need You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
