🚨 FLASH FLOOD WARNING - Hawaii Weather 3/14 - Evening

Good evening. Hawaii. I'm Michael Mosby. Folks, we've got a serious situation unfolding today. A powerful Kona low is anchored northwest of the state, absolutely pummeling us with a wild mix of hazards. We're talking dangerous flash flooding, damaging winds. And even winter storm conditions on the Big Island summits. The ground is already saturated after nearly 3 inches of rain in the last day. And it simply can't take any more water. As the sun sets. Here's the breakdown. A narrow but intense rainband is stalling between Oahu and Maui County this afternoon, meaning rainfall totals are going to jump quickly. Down on Oahu. Here comes a high near 80 degrees under cloudy skies. But it's windy, with southwest winds around 28 miles an hour and gusts up to 40. Thunderstorms are likely this afternoon, producing heavy rain, tonight, the rain risk continues, with lows dropping to about 75 degrees. Over on Maui, the threat is even higher. Highs reach 79 degrees today, but a Flash Flood Warning is in effect for Molokai until 8:30 P.M. This evening. Heavy rain is moving in from the southwest at a rate of up to an inch per hour. Streams are rising fast there. Tonight, lows dip to 70 degrees, but the rain keeps coming, with potential rainfall amounts between 3 and 4 inches. The Big Island is dealing with a wild mix of weather, you'll see highs around 80 degrees with haze and thunderstorms. The wind is howling out of the south at 30 miles an hour, gusting to 65 miles an hour. Up at the summits above 12,000 feet? it's a winter wonderland, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect until Monday morning. We're expecting an additional 12 to 20 inches of snow, with wind gusts over 100 miles an hour creating blizzard conditions. Moving on. Here's your heads-up for the week ahead, while the Kona low begins to lift northeast and weaken starting Sunday. The damaging winds will ease up significantly by Monday for lower elevations, however, the trade winds aren't coming back right away. Here comes a week of light, variable winds and unsettled weather, expect periods of rain and possible thunderstorms to linger through Friday. It will remain wet and cloudy statewide, with highs staying in the upper 70s to low 80s. Looking ahead. Please today. Avoid streams and drainage ditches.
