I can explain why I’m right all day long. God sees what I’m actually doing. Listening to his word ought to change how I earn my living, how I treat my neighbor, and whether I hear somebody asking for help. Proverbs puts honesty, diligence, and mercy right there together. I don’t get to pick the one I’m good at and use it to excuse the others. Working hard doesn’t make a dishonest deal honest. Being right about something doesn’t give me permission to ignore a person in need. There’s plenty here to examine in my own conduct before grading anybody else’s. Jesus brings it right down to that: hear the word, then put it to work.
