1 Corinthians 15:12-20 Psalm 17:1bcd, 6-7, 8b, 15 Luke 8:1-3

Paul won't let anybody split the difference. Either the dead are raised or Christ wasn't, and if Christ wasn't, then the preaching is empty, the faith is empty, you're still in your sins, and the people who died believing it are simply gone. He says if this life is all the hope we've got, we're the most pitiable men alive. No comfort offered for a half-position. Then: but now Christ has been raised. First fruits — the front of the harvest, not the whole of it, which means more is coming in behind him. The psalm is a man asking to be hidden under the shadow of God's wings and saying that when he wakes he'll be satisfied with seeing God's face. And Luke names the people already living like it's true. Mary, out of whom seven demons went. Joanna, whose husband worked for Herod. Susanna. They funded the whole traveling ministry out of their own possessions. Nobody made them. They'd been healed, and they spent what they had on the man who did it.
