PATREON PREVIEW: "The Art of Andor" (Andorks: Detours)
Esplicito
“Mad but real.” That's how Tony Gilroy described his goal for ANDOR in his original manifesto for the series. It's one of the many, many, many, insights included in the newly released book "The Art of Star Wars: Andor" by Phil Szostak. We originally had different plans for this Detour, but once we cracked this big boy open, we knew we had to detour from the detour and talk to you about our first impressions. We find a treasure trove of original plans for the series, better understand how much the pandemic and the Hollywood strikes impacted production, get some validation that some of our bonkers theories weren’t so bonkers, obsess over Tony Gilroy’s repeated use of the word “funk”, finally get some answers on the scarcity of alien freaks in season 1, and so much more! (Also, we owe you an apology, Luke Hull. We weren’t really familiar with your game.) 🧭 Do you want to hear this ENTIRE episode and listen on as we look forward to discuss season 2? That's What the Credits Are For with Sean T. Collins ("Nobody's Listening!" Part 5)
Esplicito
[extreme Jim Downey voice]: "𝘋𝘢𝘷𝘰 𝘚𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘶𝘯? 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘯 𝘧𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘳?” This week on ANDORKS, we’re delighted to be joined by television critic Sean T. Collins as we finally wrap up Andor's season 1, episode 9, “Nobody’s Listening”! Together we explore the upper echelon of the galaxy, from banking and tax-dodging on Chandrilla to the intelligentsia of the ISB leadership on Coruscant. And nobody’s impacted more than their shared malice than Cassian Andor and the prisoners stuck on Narkina 5. There we’re forced to say farewell to a very crotchety friend – and see the final push that leads Kino Loy to rebellion. Other discussion topics include Anton Lesser, the shared Venn diagram of actors shared between Andor and Game of Thrones (and Harry Potter and Doctor Who), failed palindromes, space Rupert Murdoch, crash out dances, Phil Ochs, what the hell happened with The Rise of Skywalker, if the bifurcation of the light side and the dark side of the force is a fascist belief, and more! 👋 Follow Sean at @seantcollins.com on Bluesky, find all of his work at seantcollins.com and join his Patreon here! 🧭 Speaking of Patreons, you can subscribe to our BRAND NEW Patreon at patreon.com/andorkspod where you can listen to our full bonus DETOUR episodes, get early access to every episode of Andorks, and more fun features! Springtime for Palpatine with Justin Michael ("Nobody's Listening!" Part 4)
Esplicito
Do you like television shows about traitors and murderers in space? We know you do. That’s why we’ve brought in an expert in the genre: Justin Michael, a writer on the new Among Us television show on Paramount+! Justin joins us as we continue our way through Season 1 Episode 9, “Nobody’s Listening”, wherein we travel from the familial prison of Eedy Karn’s co-op apartment, to the literal prison on Narkina 5, to the social prison of the Mothma family dinner table, to the uh, well, we wouldn’t call Syril and Dedra’s relationship a prison, but it’s certainly “not good". Other crucial discussion topics include Muppets, how well the entertainment industry is going, Jiminy Glick, the nature of filler episodes, Stephen Sondheim, Chandrillan misogyny, and how sometimes a cigarro is just a cigarro. 👋 Follow Justin at @heyjustin on Instagram! 📺 Check out Justin's shows AMONG US and INFINITY TRAIN! 🧭 Subscribe to our BRAND NEW Patreon at patreon.com/andorkspod for the other half of this detour, along with early access to every episode of Andorks. 📬 Email andorkspod@gmail.com with any questions or topics you want us to cover in upcoming episodes! PATREON PREVIEW: Stalag 17 (Andorks: Detours)
Esplicito
Here’s the story: a cynical dashing rogue, unfairly arrested and jailed by fascists, is forced to convince his fellow prisoners that escape is the only option. Also, his escape plan involves a toilet. But no, we’re not talking about Cassian Andor on Narkina 5! Of course we're talking about William Holden’s J.J. Sefton in Billy Wilder’s 1953 prison-of-war camp classic, Stalag 17. For this week’s Andorks Detour, Rusteen and Alex get lost somewhere on the Danube river to discuss the Academy Award winning movie, the long history of prison break films, and debate if, or how, the film influenced Tony Gilroy in creating ANDOR. Other conversation topics include the Ocarina of Time, Jerry Lewis’ The Day the Clown Cried, Mr. Freeze, the Penguins of Madagascar, shocking Alvin and the Chipmunks revelations, and more! 🍿 If you want to watch along with us, check if Stalag 17 is available to stream for free with your library card via Kanopy! Don’t make the mistake of watching the terrible Tubi transfer like Alex did. (There’s also a decent upload on YouTube, but support your local libraries!) 🧭 Make sure to subscribe to the Andorks Patreon at patreon.com/andorkspod for full access to this episode, our past and future Detours, early access to every episode of Andorks, and other member perks! 📬 Email andorkspod@gmail.com with any questions or topics you want us to cover in upcoming episodes! How to Organize A Prison Break with Sydney Ghazarian ("Nobody's Listening!" Part 3)
Esplicito
Jane McAlevey once said that “organizing, at its core, is about raising expectations.” This week, it’s also about raising hell. As we reach the midpoint of Andor S01E09 “Nobody’s Listening” – and the Narkina 5 arc as a whole – we figured we needed to discuss ORGANIZING. That's why we’re excited to be joined by our friend and political organizing expert, Sydney Ghazarian! We talk about how to organize your workplace – or in Cassian's situation – organize your prison, class traitors, the racial semiotics of Legos, the Philippine Revolution, ICE deportations, whether the Galaxy is industrialized enough to ever transition to communism, if Melshi would've fit in with the dirtbag left, and perhaps finally resolve the argument of whether Watto is Jewish or Armenian. 👋 Follow Syd at @grandaddynebula on Instagram! 🌹 Join the Democratic Socialists of America, the largest mass organization for an anti-capitalist future in the United States! 🇦🇲 Watch Becca Melkonian's breakdown of who is Armenian in the Star Wars universe. 🧭 Subscribe to our BRAND NEW Patreon at patreon.com/andorkspod for the other half of this detour, along with early access to every episode of Andorks. 📬 Email andorkspod@gmail.com with any questions or topics you want us to cover in upcoming episodes! The Real Slim Shady with Charles Star ("Nobody's Listening!" Part 2)
Esplicito
Does the Outer Rim have a Geneva Convention? Are there war crimes in Star Wars? We ask this because we’re making our way through ANDOR Season 1 Episode 9 “Nobody’s Listening”, and well, it sure seems like we’re looking at some war crimes. We wanted to bring on An Actual Lawyer to talk us through it – that’s why we’re excited to welcome this week’s special guest: Charles Star, the co-host of the No Homework podcast! We discuss the legacy of state-sanctioned torture, if we should even be celebrating Glup Shittos on this podcast, Dr. Gorst’s Audacity output, Manichaeism, Bix Beiderbecke, whether or not Mon Mothma has ever had a political debate with E.T., and more! So strap on those giant terrifying headphones and listen in, won't you? 👋 Follow Charles at @ugarles.bsky.social on Bluesky! 🎧 Listen to Charles on his podcasts No Homework and City Saint / Country Saint, and on his potentially record-setting number of podcast appearances! 📰 Read "Torture Music Leaves No Marks, But Destroys Minds" by Chloe Davis 🧭 Subscribe to our BRAND NEW Patreon at patreon.com/andorkspod for the other half of this detour, along with early access to every episode of Andorks 📬 Email andorkspod@gmail.com with any questions or topics you want us to cover in upcoming episodes! "Nobody's Listening"? Well, not for long, because it's time for you to START listening as we kick-off our coverage of Episode 8 of Season 1 of ANDOR here on Andorks! We're joined this week by our friend, the incredibly talented filmmaker and television writer, Nida Chowdhry! We dig deep into the crucial interrogation scene between Dedra Meero and Bix Caleen, meet Space Mengele, draw tenuous "Spaceballs" connections, talk Bollywood, consider Jordan Peterson's never-ending maladies, admire billowing cloaks, and of course, decide who's a fish and who's a thief. 👋 Make sure to follow Nida on Instagram and keep an eye out for her new movie "Anxious" releasing soon! 🧭 Subscribe to our BRAND NEW Patreon at patreon.com/andorkspod for the other half of this detour, along with early access to every episode of Andorks 📬 Email andorkspod@gmail.com with any questions or topics you want us to cover in upcoming episodes! PATREON PREVIEW: THX 1138 (Andorks: Detours)
Esplicito
The Narkina 5 Arc on Andor isn't just inspired by George Lucas's original Star Wars movies. It's also deeply indebted to another George Lucas project... and we're not talking Strange Magic (yet). So shave your head and pop your Political Repression Pills, because we're taking a DETOUR this week on ANDORKS to visit George Lucas' debut film THX 1138! Join us as we explore a totalitarian nightmare in which sex is outlawed, compliance is mandatory, and Jesus is a robot. Alex and Rusteen recap the film and discuss how the film reflects the anxieties of the 1960s, whether it's as profound as it thinks it is, how it connects to Andor, and... the New York Knicks playoff run(?). So please, enjoy George Lucas's incredible thoughts and incredible minds. 🧭 Subscribe to our BRAND NEW Patreon at patreon.com/andorkspod so you can listen the ENTIRETY of this detour, get every episode of Andorks a MONTHLY EARLY, receive access to all of our previous Detours, and MORE! 🎥 If you've never seen the movie, Lucas' "director's cut" of the film is readily available for rental, and there's probably a DVD waiting for you at your local library! That said, if you Google "THX Grindhouse Cut" you might just find a "despecialized" version without the massive amounts of edits that George inserted in 2004. But you didn't hear that from us. 📬 Email andorkspod@gmail.com with any questions or topics you want us to cover in upcoming episodes! Clarity of Purpose with Shanti Singh ("Narkina 5" Part 6)
Esplicito
We opened the Book of Saw this week, and now its time to take the trip to Segra Milo and visit Saw Gerrera's Partisans in their home base. It's not hyperbole to say we've been looking forward to this episode since we had the idea for this podcast, and we couldn't think of a better guest than Shanti Singh, a tenant organizer from DSA San Francisco. Shanti knows a thing or two about leftist infighting, and in this episode we get to talk about Saw's antagonistic relationship with Luthen and the many fantastic glup shittos produced by SF City Hall. 👋 Follow Shanti on Twitter and on Instagram! 🧭 Subscribe to our BRAND NEW Patreon at patreon.com/andorkspod for tons of bonus content and early access to episodes! 📬 Email andorkspod@gmail.com with any questions or topics you want us to cover in upcoming episodes! Pride & Prejudice & Minions with Liz McFarland (“Narkina 5” Part 5)
Esplicito
In a 1983 interview with Rolling Stone, Carrie Fisher said to "not forget that these movies are basically boys’ fantasies." 40 years later, has ANDOR improved on the franchise's reputation? To answer that question and more, we're excited to welcome this week's special guest, the incredibly talent cosplayer and maker, Liz McFarland! Together we begin to wrap up Season 1, Episode 7 "Narkina 5", check in on Kleya, Vel, Cinta, Mon, and Bix, learn about costuming across the Star Wars franchise, receive an update on Alex's marriage to Mrs. Marki, and finally ask the most important question: what were The Minions doing from the years 1939-1945? Also, if you're reading this, and you have any PR or media connections that can get us to Star Wars Celebration in 2027, please email us at andorkspod@gmail.com. We really want to go. 😔 --- 👋 Follow Liz on Bluesky and on Instagram! ⚠️ Make sure to check out Crashspace! 🎸 Wishlist Rock Beasts on Steam! 🧭 Subscribe to our BRAND NEW Patreon at patreon.com/andorkspod for tons of bonus content and early access to episodes! 📬 Email andorkspod@gmail.com with any questions or topics you want us to cover in upcoming episodes!
