Ep. 89 Jay Busch: Diversity in Cycling

Have you ever looked around and noticed just how white cycling is? According to a recent USA Cycling survey with more than 7,000 respondents, only 3% indicated they are black, 6% hispanic or latino and 4% Asian. Jay Busch, a Cat. 4 living in Des Moines, began showing up on the race-paced group rides just a couple years ago. Like every group ride - it's hard to actually get to know anyone, other than knowing what bike they ride and maybe the kit they usually show up in... "You mean the guy in the red jersey on the blue Trek that has been riding with us for the past couple of years?" "Yeah, does anyone know his name?" That's often how it goes, as it did with me and my introduction to Jay Busch "The guy in the pink jersey on the sweet black and white Canyon?" I got to know Jay by name recently when he lent me his wheel to catch the group after I'd been dropped - and I wondered if it was hard for him to be a black man and jump into this very white sport... so I had to ask - and we agreed to talk about it on tape! Thanks to Jay for being open and honest and hopping on Bike Talk with Dave! A great ride to challenge your bike skills is the Core4 Race in Iowa City, Iowa on August 19, 2023. We went along with our microphone this year to to find some stories from some who'd been going for decades and some first timers - we wanted to talk to some of those that feed the hungry cyclists and seek out some music - what we came up with is the 2023 Bike Talk with Dave RAGBRAI Spectacular! As he grew, his dedication, determination and drive led him to move up the ranks, travel the country and even into Canada and land a spot on the Lindenwood University Cycling Team. Ep. 84 Ames Triathlon and Grass Roots Events

In it's fourth year, the Ames Triathlon, a sprint triathlon in Ames Iowa, has grown each year and includes participants from the beginners to the pros. As nationally branded events continue to dominate the market more each year, we went to Ames to talk to participants about what makes grass roots racing, not only so appealing to compete in, but why grass roots events are so important for the growth and survival of all events. The Ames Triathlon is held the last weekend in June each year and information can be found at www.amestriathlon.comAnother great ride to challenge your fat tire skills is the Core4 Race in Iowa City, Iowa on August 19, 2023. Ep. 83 Gary Crandall: The Chequamegon 40 turns 40

Gary Crandall, a member of the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame, has helped the Chequamgon Fat Tire Festival grow from it's 27-rider beginnings in 1983 (check out what episode this is!) to one of the monuments of mountain biking in the small northern Wisconsin towns of Hayward and Cable. In this episode Gary recounts the early days of the ride, from early courses, the people who made the race happen and the riders who raced through the rolling trails. While Lifetime now owns and manages the race, Gary continues to volunteer his time to make sure the event continues into the future. Ep. 82 Susan DeMattei

Susan DeMattei was among the first generation of mountain bikers to compete in UCI World Cup races, World Championships and in the Olympics. While NORBA was the top level of competition in the 1980's, the UCI jumped on the fat-tired bandwagon in the 1990's. Susan DeMattei began competing in the NORBA races in the U.S. in the 1980's, which led her to two UCI Mountain Bike World Championship silver medals in the early 1990's and eventually to the Olympic Games first Mountain Bike race in 1996, earning a bronze medal and solidifying her place in the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. In late May, we connected to discuss the early development of mountain biking as well as the importance of encouraging w0men to discover the joys of mountain biking today (or any cycling!). Susan is married to fellow Mountain Bike Hall of Fame inductee, David Wiens, who is currently the Executive Director of the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) which hosts a Women's Mountain Bike Day the first weekend in May each year. Join IMBA at www.imba.com today and support women in mountain biking! A great ride to encourage women to ride on any surface is the Core4 Race in Iowa City, Iowa on August 19, 2023. Ep. 81, Daniel Barvin - Tackling both ALS and Unbound Gravel

Daniel Barvin is no stranger to ALS - it's affected multiple generations of his family, and is currently expected to affect his life in the future, as he is a carrier of the gene that causes ALS as well as FTD. Not letting that stop him from living a life full with cycling and children, he's found a way to have children with his wife that do not carry the gene and has started a non-profit organization to support pre-symptomatic carriers of the ALS-causing gene. He also works for a company - Coya Therapeutics - a Houston-based clinical-stage company that develops multiple Treg-modulating therapies for neurodegenerative, autoimmune, and metabolic diseases, such as ALS. In an effort to raise funds for his non-profit organization, as well as raise awareness for pre-symptomatic carriers, he turned to his passion - cycling. Tackling the 200-mile Unbound Gravel Race is no easy matter for even top-professionals, much less the other 4,000 cyclists who roll across the starting line in Emporia - and this year, 2023, would prove to be one of the more challenging editions, with long muddy stretches, heat and humidity and afternoon thunderstorms. Barvin talks openly about his challenges with ALS, his hope for the future, his organization: End the Legacy, as well as his adventures with the Unbound Gravel Race. Ep. 80 International Women's Mountain Bike Day: A Midwest perspective

On May 6, 2023, The International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) celebrated the International Women's Mountain Bike Day, encouraging clubs and individuals to invite women to experience the joys of mountain biking. In Des Moines, two members of the Central Iowa Trail Association (CITA) - the local IMBA affiliate club, hosted a ride on some local trails - Jolie Erbacher and Emily Orth. While rain delayed the ride for a few weeks, it did not dampen the enthusiasm for riding local singletrack. Bike Talk With Dave joined in the fun and tried to capture the spirit of the day. Dave also reached out to Mountain Bike Hall of Famer and Olympic bronze medalist in the first ever Olympic Mountain Bike race - Susan DeMattei, who gave her thoughts on women's mountain biking - you'll be able to hear a full episode with DeMattei in Episode 82. In this episode focused on women, it was only appropriate that Dee Mable join in the fun for the intro!
