Ep. 99 Wendy Hermans, Father of World Tour rider Quinten Hermans

Traveling with his son, Quinten Hermans to the three-round UCI Cyclocross World Cups in the U.S. in 2021, Wendy Hermans took time to talk with Dave about how his son rose to the top of the World Cyclocross stage at the Jingle Cross World Cup. Since that time, Quinten has migrated to road racing with Mattiew van der Poel on the Alpecin-Deceuninck UCI World Tour Team.

Ep. 98 Dave Wiens, International Mountain Bike Association Executive Director

Dave Wiens is so much more than his current title. He started riding mountain bikes in the 1980's and got really fast. He holds such titles as NORBA National Champ, World Cup Mountain Bike Champion, Leadville Champion and now serves as a champion for trails! As a mountain biker, he found it necessary to grab a shovel, rake or clippers to help build an maintain trails in and around his hometown of Gunnison, Colorado. That work eventually led him to a seat on the Board of Directors of the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA), where he served for a time as it's President, and now where he works full-time as it's Executive Director. His passion for cycling and trails is strong and as such, he helps advocate for local, regional and national trails around the country and world. He would encourage you to get involved in your local trail association through IMBA at www.imba.com as well as advocate for kinder, happier trails at a new organization pulled together through IMBA: Trails Are Common Ground. www.trailsarecommonground.org. Ep. 97 Peter Stetina: Privateer Pioneer

Peter Stetina spent a decade racing on the World Tour in the biggest races on the planet. He gave all that up, moved back to the U.S., found his own sponsors and lined up at the biggest and best gravel and mountain bike races - including the Lifetime Grand Prix. Now, instead of pacing his team leader to the top of mountain passes in the three grand tours, he races for the podium at the Belgian Waffle Ride, Unbound, Leadville and Midsouth. We talked with him to ask about his transition from the Trek Segefredo Team Bus to #vanlife, as well as the evolution of the gravel scene in the U.S. He has also added the title of "Race Promotor" to his resume and promotes a gravel/mountain bike race, Paydirt around his hometown of Carson City, Nevada https://www.stetinaspaydirt.com/Follow him as he chases the podium at the Lifetime Grand Prix and the rest at https://www.peterstetina.com/ or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/pstetina/Consider supporting Bike Talk with Dave by rating, reviewing and sharing on your favorite podcast platform. Ep. 96 Emily Newsom

After five years racing at the highest level with the EF Education World Tour Cycling Team, Emily Newsom made the decision to focus on gravel and U.S. road races. A high speed crash in a stage race in May left her with multiple broken bones and a challenging recovery. Now, with only one race left in the 7-race Lifetime Grand Prix series, she, amazingly only missed one and even completed the challenging 100-mile Leadville Mountain Bike Race in early August. With her breadth of experience, we sought her insights on the state of women's road racing and the U.S. scene with its heavy emphasis on gravel. We also asked if the piano virtuoso would tickle the ivory's a bit for us! :) Follow Emily on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/emilyjoynewsom/Follow the Lifetime Grand Prix at https://www.lifetimegrandprix.com/Join Emily and Bike Talk with Dave at the Rattlesnake Gravel Grind on March 22-24, 2023. https://rattlesnakegravelgrind.bike/Please consider supporting Bike Talk with Dave by rating, reviewing and sharing on your favorite podcast platform. Ep. 95 Jake Kuperman: Cycling inspired Art

The art of storytelling is the story of Jake. Inspired by nature, cycling, and imagination, Jake shares his art with the rest of us in the form of huge murals which bring color and interest to public spaces around his hometown of Des Moines. His latest cycling-inspired work, along the Meredith Trail below SW 9th on The Depot, greets cyclists, runners and walkers as they wind their way through the city. We met along the trail next to his recently finished piece to talk about his art and how cycling inspired him to create. See more of his work at www.jacobkuperman.com or follow him on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/kuperman.draws/Please consider supporting Bike Talk with Dave by rating, reviewing and sharing on your favorite podcast platform. Ep. 94 Cole Paton, Off-road/Gravel Endurance Cyclist

Cole Paton discovered his panache' for longer endurance events when the pandemic made it impossible for him to chase UCI World Cup points on the European mountain bike circuit. His exceptional technical skills in the dirt and powerful engine have made him a formidable challenger in the season-long race series, the Lifetime Grand Prix. We connected on the fifth leg of the 2023 Grand Prix, the Chequamegon 40 where he finished third in an unprecedented 14-man sprint for the finish. He currently sits in second in the Grand Prix with two events to go. He was kind to connect via zoom while in Alabama preparing for the U.S. Marathon Mountain Bike Championships in late September. Keep up with Cole as he continues his journey on the Giant Bicycles Gravel Team. .and follow him on instagram by looking for his name: Cole Paton. Ep. 93 Why Cross is cool! With Scott Sumpter and more!

Cyclocross is many things to many people - fun, challenging, exciting, community - and to celebrate the beginning of #crossiscoming or #crossishere :) we took Mr. Microphone to a local VERY grassroots cross practice in Des Moines and asked people why they dig the niche sport. We also spent some time with Mr. BIKEIOWA Scott Sumpter to talk about this grassroots weekly practice- a model for other communities - as well as a shameless plug for the BIKEIOWA Capital City Cross weekend of racing on September 23,24 in Des Moines. We hope you can relate to people's "why" and get out on the grass, mud, sand and hills - either between the tape or next to the tape with cowbells, dollar bills and some delicious beverages of your choice. We encourage you to join the fun - if you've never done cross, don't be afraid! You can ride any bike you want and jump in a local race! And if you already enjoy the sport - invite your friends! If they're intimidated take em to a local weeknight practice and if that's not an option, take to a local park and ride around in the grass! Cuz cross is awesome! Ep. 92 Re-entry and Post-Race Blues with Joe Stiller and Rachel Moe, LMHC, LPC

We have all felt the let-down after a big event, but what if that event isn't over in a couple hours, or even a couple of days - but is long enough to become a way of life while you're on the trial, living the life of a bikepacker? Coming home can be hard, so hard that the sense of loss can lead to real grief - and if that grief isn't dealt with, anxiety and even depression can set in... After a long instagram post Alexandra Houchin, I reached out to Bar Yak owner and long-time bikepacker Joe Stiller as well as Licensed Mental Health Counselor Rachel Moe to talk about the very real post-race blues and how we can best address them. To connect with Joe and set your bike up for bikepacking success head to Baryak.com. Please consider supporting Bike Talk with Dave by rating, reviewing and sharing on your favorite podcast platform.
