70. Light Me Up
Explicit
Welcome back WITS listeners! This week, join Elle and Kay as we discuss Light Me Up by Sabrina Cross. WITS Smut Scale: πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™ We start off this week discussing yet another AI lawsuit. The lines continue to get fuzzier and Kay really just doesn't want to end up like the people from Wall-E. This week's book combines sentient objects, a little electro-play, and a miscommunication trope that makes us feel bad for the lamp. An appearance of Thor, and a brave mortal make for an unexpected gift from the gods. For such a short story (this one is only 28 pages!) there was a surprisingly flushed out plotline, and just the perfect amount of smut. Overall, Kay gave this ⭐⭐⭐.5 stars, while Elle gave it ⭐⭐⭐. 69. Creamed by my Monster Stand Mixer
Explicit
Welcome back WITS listeners! Join Elle and Kay this week as we discuss Creamed by my Monster Stand Mixer by Krista LaRae. WITS Smut Scale: πŸ™πŸ™ We start off this week by realizing that we accidentally participate in the Haters Book club thats been trending on social media. In this weeks book, we're slightly confused why the MMC (monster main character?) is German, and why the MMC isn't her boss. Both Kay and Elle related to the FMC being made to feel like shes "too much," and were glad to see that the love interest is not at all bothered by her "muchness." We wish there was a little more smut, but if you've been listening for a while, you know that theres quite literally no pleasing us. Overall, this was a miss for Kay, with ⭐ and Elle rated it slightly higher with ⭐⭐ . 68. Filthy Strokes
Explicit
Welcome back WITS listeners! This week, Elle and Kay found their inner artists with Filthy Strokes by Laura Victoria. WITS Smut Scale: πŸ™πŸ™ Elle stumbled upon some messy booksta-drama somewhere in the rabbit hole of Threads, and we discuss the difference between airing dirty laundry for your followers, and followers understanding when creatives deserve their privacy (spoiler: authors deserve to have private lives, despite how much you love their work.). In this week's book, Elle was briefly teased with a FMC who uses protection while the sentient object is still in paintbrush form and then seems to forget it exists once he's a human. Both Kay and Elle were a little confused with the darker elements that don't always seem to align with where the story went. We got a bit of a jump scare with a preemptive "I love you" followed by a curse-induced ghosting? Overall, this was ⭐⭐ from both Elle and Kay. Creative premise, but we had too many questions. 67. Gage
Explicit
Welcome back WITS listeners! This week, join Elle and Kay as they discuss Gage by Imogen Knowed. WITS Smut Scale: πŸ™πŸ™ We start off firmly in the camp that its ok to look up words while you're reading, in fact, we encourage it. We do not encourage authors to write at a lower reading level for those who do not wish to do so. In this week's book, we're faced with the question- curse or gift? Whichever side you land on... are you trying it out within the first 10 minutes? Our FMC not only immediately tests the warning, and the item of choice is a ruler. As wild as this was, we loved it. The smut, though vanilla, definitely smuts, and the love story that we're given is exceptionally sweet. Both Kay and Elle gave this one ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. We loved it! 66. That One Time with the Lemon Drop
Explicit
Welcome back WITS listeners! This week, Elle and Kay were lucky enough to get an ARC of That One Time with the Lemon Drop by Alex LaBruyere. WITS Smut Scale: πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™ (non-con elements) A lot has changed in Elle's life in the past few weeks, she's a married lady now, she chopped off all of her hair, and she moved. She's not too busy to get mad about another article shit-talking romance books though. We talk healing in relationships, and how we are always our own worst enemy when it comes to negative self talk. The non-con element, though not our favorite, kind of works because the lemon drop comes with all of the MMCs memories AND because non-con is A FICTIONAL TROPE. We discuss how people tend to act the worst for the people that they know love them unconditionally, but still question Davey's back-talk to the literal goddess of war. Overall, both Kay and Elle gave this ⭐⭐⭐⭐ and cried seeing our names in the acknowledgements. We love ya Alex! 65. Bedding the Bedding
Explicit
Welcome back WITS listeners! This week, join Elle and Kay as they discuss Bedding the Bedding by Annara Layne. WITS Smut Scale: πŸ™πŸ™ This week in the smutverse we discuss how Chat GPT is getting more use than many nonfiction books. Our book this week, definitely not nonfiction, leaves the sentient object in its object form. Elle thinks it's a love letter to single women, Kay still wishes it would turn into a person. The main character this week is getting over a breakup, and gives an amazing closure conversation that both Elle and Kay wish they could channel in the real world (everybody... Kay is really getting there.) Kay has conflicting feelings about becoming a regular somewhere... while it's ultimately the dream, she's also a mood orderer. Also, both Elle and Kay would probably commit some crimes to get an apartment with a rent of $200 and the opportunity to work in an antique store. Overall, Elle gave this ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ and Kay came in at ⭐⭐⭐.5. 64. Cirrus About You
Explicit
Welcome back WITS listeners! This week, Kay and Elle discuss Cirrus About You by Latrexa Nova. WITS Smut Scale: πŸ™ This week we start off with, much to Kay's dismay, more not-so-good news from the smut verse. Specifically, how AI is continuing to be a thorn in the side for authors and readers alike, and is now being used as a method of getting authors cancelled. For our book this week, we loved the non-binary and demisexual representation, but were left a little blue in the romance (well really the smut) side of things. There was also a... frog cult? Kay's got some weird stuff on her FYP on socials, but she's never seen the likes of a frog cult before. We also discuss the prevalence of fan-art and fan-fiction, and how it's worked its way into the story. Overall, Kay gave this ⭐, while Elle gave it ⭐⭐. 63. My Date with Bubble Tea
Explicit
Welcome back WITS listeners! Join Elle and Kay this week as we discuss My Date with Bubble Tea by Sylvia Morrow WITS Smut Scale: πŸ™πŸ™ Elle finally has some good news from the Smutverse, and Kay is thrilled (she's been asking for some good news for weeks now)! The book this week had us asking what size Boba Tea cup would be appropriate- surely the size of a full grown man would be too big, but a regular cup is too small for that... necessary usage? Elle is horrified that the concept of bacteria was included, knowing full well where that tea is going to end up. Theres an interesting level of an insta-love dynamic, and Kay thinks she's more on board with it because he falls first. Overall, Elle gave this ⭐.5, while Kay rated this ⭐⭐. An interesting take on a pretty obscure sentient object, we'll give her credit!! My Date with Bubble Tea by Silvia Morrow Next Week: Cirrus About You by Latrexa Nova WE HAVE MERCH!!! 62. Fully Charged
Explicit
Welcome back WITS listeners! This week, Kay and Elle discuss Fully Charged by Nicole Parker and Unfortunate Reads WITS Smut Scale: Kay is desperate for some good news in the smut verse, and today comes with a bad review that seems to give us some good reading potential. As promised, the link to Strange Familiars can be found here. Kay has already downloaded it, and added it to her TBR. We discuss if Elle is still in the stone age using battery operated toys, and Kay is finding herself in this story without her consent. Kay makes a list of all of the words that the authors can use to represent the main characters "cave of wonders," which honestly gives Holly Wilde a run for her money. Kay brings us on a tangent and a biology lesson, and Elle has a soapbox moment about the scientific study of women's bodies. While we appreciate the MMC being fully there to make sure that the FMC is satisfied, we were both left wanting when it came to the insta-love part of the story line. It really goes off the rails with the epilogue, and if anyone gave Kay's kids a drum set they would be less than politely asked to leave. Overall, this was Kay's 2nd read, and she gave this ⭐⭐.5, though she's definitely less surprised a year and 1/2 and over 60 sentient object romances later, while Elle gave this ⭐⭐ for her first read. 61. Knotted by the Beast
Explicit
Welcome back WITS listeners! Join Elle and Kay this week as we discuss Knotted by the Beast by Siena Stone WITS Smut Scale: πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™ Elle thinks that the bookish community needs to take a deep breath and maybe take a break to go outside for a timeout based on the smutverse news. We discuss how the Beast's first mistake in this book was letting Belle's father leave, when he really has no way of enforcing his punishment for stealing the flower since he's trapped in the castle because of the curse. Both ladies agree that there was some omegaverse standards that were overlooked or missed entirely. As usual, we can never be satisfied. Either theres too much plot and not enough smut, or too much of the same smut and not enough plot. Kay is happy that the beast stays in his beast form at the end of this, while Elle firmly believes that he should be able to be the one to make that decision. Overall, both Elle and Kay gave this ⭐, with the Kay's biggest complaints having to do with some major plot holes, and Elle really not liking the Beast's lack of growth at the end. WE HAVE MERCH!!!
