Between the 9th and 15th centuries, the Khmer Empire controlled Southeast Asia and built one of the most sophisticated civilizations in the medieval world. At its peak, Angkor was the largest city on Earth outside of China - home to over 1 million people, massive stone temples, intricate irrigation systems, and artistic achievements that still astound modern engineers. Then, around 1300, the entire civilization mysteriously abandoned the city and vanished into the jungle for 500 years until Western explorers rediscovered it in the 19th century, choked by vines and slowly being reclaimed by the rainforest.
