Upstream Ag Professional - August 2nd 2026
The ag market is genuinely tough right now: compressed commodity prices, higher input and equipment costs, and growers scrutinizing every dollar. Yet some founders and agribusinesses are still growing and hitting their numbers. The difference often comes down to mindset. The ones winning ask "what can I do to influence the market?" instead of "what is the market giving me?" This episode makes the case that the story a company tells itself about the market becomes an input into real results. It draws on two studies outside of agriculture, the 2014 "placebo sleep" experiment and Crum and Langer's 2007 study of hotel room attendants, to show how belief alone can change performance and even physical outcomes when the underlying situation hasn't changed at all. From there it turns to agribusiness, contrasting how competitors described the exact same micronutrient market in opposite terms, and how Mosaic's bullish view has tracked with real growth in its Performance Products and biologicals lines. A personal story about crossing "uninterested" farmers off a call list, only to lose them to a retailer willing to have the conversation, drives the point home. With the Thomas Theorem and Morgan Housel's "best story wins," the takeaway is clear: fundamentals set the range, but the story you choose determines where you land in it. Choose it deliberately, because either way it will be real in its consequences.
