The first day of my Newborn Baby.
The beginning of my baby's new life is exciting and tiring. Sleep when i can, it gets easier! This experience takes a look at what your newborn baby can sense.
How will your baby look like?
Babies often come with blue-ish skin and yellow spots. Newborn babies often come out covered in fluids such as amniotic fluid, blood, and vernix. Sadly, to say this is expected.
As your baby breathes, their skin is turning pink. While their hands and feet may still look blueish for a while, in the end, they will turn out just like everyone else's.
The amniotic fluid and the vernix exist because they existed when s/he was in the womb. Babies need their senses to develop fully. Smell and taste are important for who they will become. Babies should feel secure. You can help them by holding them in their familiar things.
The birth of the placenta and cutting the umbilical cord
Your baby will be born, and after that, you will have contractions to help you deliver the placenta. Once this happens, the umbilical cord, which is connected to the placenta and delivers nutrients and removing wastes will net to be cut off.
Skin-to-skin contact
When you have a normal vaginal birth, your baby will stay on your chest as soon as they are able. Your child needs to be warm and secure so them staying close to your skin feels right for them, this is an important time after birth.
Doing this simple thing:
Reduces colic, promotes feeding & reduces crying tremendously, helps maintain your baby’s body temperature such that he or she does not overheat.
This first contact will be an important one. Not only will the new arrivals be weighed, measured, and observed to make sure they are healthy; it is also an opportunity for them to become familiar with mom.
Caesarian sections are hard. If you have one, make sure your midwife or doctor is looking out for you and your baby by making skin-to-skin contact happen as soon as possible. It may be possible for you or your partner to hold your baby-skin-to-skin in theatre and in recovery.
There are no strict rules about who can hold the baby after birth.
Newborn babies will show signs of wanting to feed soon after birth and usually attach and suck at the breast about 50 minutes after birth. Babies can breastfeed by attaching to their chest for around one hour. Once they attach, they will continue to feed. If this doesn't happen, you will be advised on how by midwives, your doctor, or lactation consultants.
Colostrum is the first milk you make. It is opaque and often yellow in color, not pure white like regular milk It’s the ideal milk for your baby. Normally, a small amount is excreted — your baby’s belly is about the size of a marble.
If they haven’t fed for an hour or so after being born, then try again a couple of hours later. Want to give your baby a treat? Express some colostrum to feed them with.
Weighing and measuring
A midwife or doctor will often weigh the baby & measure their length, head circumference, and other various body parts in the hours after birth. Your baby doesn’t need to be washed for at least 24 hours.
Sleeping
It's a good idea for your baby to stay with you so they can get to bond and enjoy your company. You'll be able to respond easily to their needs because they're right next door if you need anything. They might sleep soon after their first feed, which is understandable given the exhaustion they’ll feel. They will probably sleep for over half of their first day in the world.
Apgar scores
One of the most important steps after birth is taking an Apgar score which rates how well your baby’s adjusting to life outside the womb. The Apgar score is measured at 1 min and 5 mins after birth while the baby is on your chest. Sometimes babies are weighed again 10 minutes after birth
They also monitor your baby's heart rate, breathing, color, muscle tone & reflexes. The maximum score is 10. A score of 7 or above usually means your baby is developing well. It is not an intelligence test nor does it predict your baby’s health later in life
There are a number of possibilities! Some parents play soothing music to their babies, others show them pictures of faces and teach them how to read these expressions. Some parents place various textures below the babies' feet and they will soon learn that certain textures scratch or tickle more than others.
Babies can taste sweet tastes by licking a finger sullied with sugar, feel the warmth.
Your baby has been listening to my voice for the last half of your pregnancy and will recognize it when I speak to them after they’re born. Your partner or support person’s voice may also be familiar if they have been talking near your baby. Your baby might be comforted by hearing your voice. They might turn their head towards you, and be able to hear your heartbeat as if they still were in the womb.
Your baby can't really see anything when they're born but they'll be able to focus on your face from about 30cm away. It is estimated that the 'cuddle distance' is around 10 inches. The baby will soon figure out that they are seeing and hearing the same thing.
Your baby will feel the amniotic fluid and your colostrum with their sense of smell. It smells similar to milk.
Urine and meconium
Within the first 24 hours, your baby should pee and poo at least once - which is known as meconium. Meconium is dark and sticky. After the first few days, your baby’s poop will start to change color and texture.
