Zophar is the third friend and he arrives like a man who has been waiting his turn with the patience of someone who is not particularly patient. Eliphaz brought a night vision and the authority of family. Bildad brought the library of the fathers. Zophar brings something neither of them had the confidence to use openly — contempt. He does not begin with sympathy, however misapplied. He does not ease into the diagnosis with diplomatic language. He walks straight to the ash heap, looks at the man who has been speaking the most theologically sophisticated speeches of the entire book, and calls him an empty talker. A mocker. A man full of words that should have been answered long ago by someone willing to say what everyone is thinking.
