On August 12, 1859, poet and educator Katherine Lee Bates was born. After witnessing the beauty of the American landscape from the summit of Pikes Peak in 1893, she wrote the words to "America the Beautiful," one of the nation's most beloved patriotic songs. Inspired by the grandeur of the country and gratitude for God's blessings, Bates created a hymn that continues to inspire Americans today. Her story teaches that appreciation for God's creations and love of country can inspire works that endure for generations.
