History of the Purple Heart Award
This Day in His-Story by American Heritage Worldwide
Episode notes
On August 7, 1782, General George Washington established the Badge of Military Merit, the forerunner of today's Purple Heart, to recognize enlisted soldiers who demonstrated exceptional bravery and faithful service. Revived in 1932, the Purple Heart now honors members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have been wounded or killed while serving their country. The lesson follows the history of the medal from the Revolutionary War to the present day, emphasizing the courage, sacrifice, and devotion of those who receive it. Students are encouraged to consider how they can put others before themselves and develop Christlike attributes of bravery and selfless service.
