The Assassination of Julius Caesar took place on the Ides of March in 44 BC. On that day, Roman senators who feared Caesar’s growing power attacked and killed him during a meeting of the Senate. Their goal was to restore the Roman Republic, but instead the event triggered a series of civil wars that ultimately ended the republic and led to the rise of the Roman Empire. The phrase “Beware the Ides of March,” made famous by William Shakespeare in his play Julius Caesar, has since become a warning about unexpected danger.
