On January 8, 1790, President George Washington delivered the first State of the Union Address before Congress at Federal Hall in New York City, fulfilling a requirement of the U.S. Constitution. In just over 1,000 words, he praised the growth of the Union and outlined priorities such as national defense, citizenship, commerce, agriculture, and unity. As the nation’s first president, Washington carefully set precedents by balancing strong leadership with respect for Congress, reassuring citizens that the new government would serve the people rather than rule over them. His address helped establish confidence in the Constitution and laid a lasting foundation for the presidency.
